We all know how easy it is to kill an Xbox 360. Just let it get a little warm and it’s done, or just stick it in a cabinet with a PS3. However, we don’t seem to hear many reports of PS3 consoles dying. The guys over at PS3Vault decided to put one through some extreme environmental tests. The result was quite shocking.
Their first test was to run the PS3 for 4 straight days in a van while dropping the temperature from 40 degrees down to 0. The console became a bit sluggish at 0 degrees, but it kept right on playing. It’s not that surprising to hear how well it did in this test. After all, how many times have you heard of a piece of electronics dying because it was cold?
Their next test blew me out of the water. They decided to stick it in a sauna for 24 hours at temperatures topping out at 120 degrees. Not only do you have the heat working against you, you’ve also got to deal with the humidity. The only issue they encountered was a slight burning smell at one point, but once again, it never skipped a beat.
I shudder at the thought of my 360 being put through these tests. While I have full confidence that it would pass the cold test, it wouldn’t last 5 minutes in that sauna. If there’s one good thing about the PS3, you don’t have to worry about it crapping out on you.

2. the ps3 constantly loses connection with it’s wireless controller.
the reason you hear more stories about 360 problems are because there are way more 360’s on the market.
my advice: go back to your “journalism” prof and demand a refund.

I just want to point out “Fanboyism” is not what we do here!
Criss Scott has written GOOD things and BAD things about XBOX 360, PS3, and Wii. If he’s a fanboy, he would not do that.

Fact is fact, the 360 has 33% defect rate, and PS3 less than 1% defect rate.
Not surprising its Sony, enough said.
No-one should be surprised Microsoft makes buggy hardware, I mean why not? They make buggy software.

Whiney noise? Have you listened to your 360? Mine sounds like a jet about to take off. What matters is percentage of defective units…MS is getting a rediculous amount of 360s returned hence the 3 year extension to keep the mass from revolting. I’d rather deal with a little whiney noise from a stable machine than my 360 which has already crapped out on me TWICE!!!!!!! And for the record my controller has never disconnected.

why is it so many people feel compelled to take a firm stance on just one machine? i’d like to slap some sense in to these idiots. I personally have both machines and i Love them both. My xbox 360 has been put thru some rigorous paces while under my ownership. (i play it all the time). unfortunately about 2 weeks ago i did finally get the red ring of death. i received an email yesterday saying it has been repaired and shipped to me. just to be clear again, i Love both machines. microsoft pushed hard to get a good lead on sony and it has a few issues. Oh well. i consider both machines along with my HDtvs to be my favorite posessions in the world. lets stop acting like mindless fools taking sides

My wireless controllers stay connected fine, but that guy is right, becuase my buddy can’t play games comfortable because of the disconnects.

It sounds an awful lot like the argument “The reason why people don’t really get viruses for linux, is because there aren’t many linux installations… its no fun”
I feel that is wrong… the ps3, in my opinion is a much better designed piece of hardware from the ground up… as Linux was built more secure from the ground up.
We do have to agree that both systems are truly amazing. They outperform most PCs for games at a much cheaper price. Although the xbox360 has a high failure rate, I’m still going to get one… just to have it.

Well, I guess its good that they paid for a PS3 to do this test, at least one. Sony needs sales, wait, that’s right, they said they are happy they didn’t sell that many this year, since they technically still own the hardware, so haven’t taken a loss on the sale yet.
That being said, I can’t wait to get one, when its priced within reason for us matured gamers that have children now. Really, how much do they think is a reasonable doling for new games?
Thats right, that doesn’t matter, the consumer decides what the correct price is, and that is why they couldn’t sell 4 million worldwide until after they dropped the price.
If it woulda been $400 out of the gate, it would have pwned.
Still not quite sure what the freezer tests prove, unless they took off the heatsinks and fans from the little black box…

my controllers are allways connected…and the system doesn’t make any noise, I can’t listen it if I’m not at 10 cm…well maybe when you put a cd yes, it makes a bit noise

haha its always the ms fan that has to start complaining. it would have been great if the xbox was never released and it was just the ps3 and the wii. but one day, the richest man in the world thinks ” crap i need more money, ill expand in to an area with many consumers and give them something they dont need, even though we havent sorted out windows and its still a buggy piece of shizzle”

My PS3’s controller never ever disconnected, but it heats up a lot. Never fails, always works. No faults.
I have one of the first units here in Portugal. Six months now, lots of hours of playing, and no problems at all.

Yup. PS3 never dies. I even have covered the air entrance of the console(by mistake). It made some noise but it never stopped.

My controller never disconnected, but a heard from a friend that the very first version of the ps3 had some bluetooth issue regarding the controller but it was fixed very fast (that was happening only with the very first 60 gig) because I currently own a 60 gig and it never happened so far, and I’m a hard gamer… :o

Ok. First off, some of you idiots need to go back to school and learn how to spell, type, and use this thing called grammar. Secondly, Both systems have their pros and cons. The PS3, while having Bluetooth connectivity, built-in Blu-ray, and a built-in wireless adapter, is expensive. Where I live, brand new, a 40Gb system, the smallest, will run you $400 even. Also, the PS3 has a limited library of awesome console-exclusive titles. The Xbox 360, having more titles, better downloadable content, and being an affordable system, does have its share of defects. The “Ring of Death” has hit two people I know, one of them twice: however, I have yet to experience any problems with mine. Speaking of being affordable, the Xbox 360 Elite, which has the biggest harddrive of the Xbox 360’s, and fewer defects, will only cost you $50 more than the smallest PS3. I personally went with the one that fit my budget. You can say what you want, but to tell the truth, I could care less about your opinion. So stop your whining, get a life, and grow up.

as far as im concirned ive had my ps3 now since about july and i couldent be happier ive never played a 360 so dont worry no idiotic remarks on my part but so far im very happy with my ps3 its awsome the blu ray player is amazingly conveinient yes theres not many games for it yet but 360 has had much more time then the ps3 and id say ps3 still doing very well with exclusives like resistance2 mgs4 and lbp those games alone make worth every cent ps3 has lowered its price to online play free apparently 360 is 50 a a year thts about enough to by another game though? that kind of sucks but anyway in my opinion a ps3 is perfect for gamers who cant get enough but again this is my opinion im sorta a ps fanboy but ive never seen any x box so im not gonna strt insulting the x-box lovers out there
