My PS3 was a later model and was not “backwards compatible” so I still have a ps3 and ps2 kicking around, and once I found out the PS Vita would not support any PSP games I was again disappointed by Sony to find out I would have to re-purchase them as downloads. These kind of actions by Sony and Microsoft make it harder on the consumer in todays dwindeling economy. I think that it might just be time to enjoy older titles and not get a new system. Perhaps I will wait for the new system to be out for 3 years before I make a purchase, atleast by then there will be many great titles and possibly a lower price on the system itself.

People complaining about “no used games” must not realize this is because it will all be streaming downloads! Free Trials and even Rentals will all be like Netflix, except all the newest releases will be available. However, prices *should* be adjusted to account for no need to manufacture and ship physical merchandise. If they become like over priced Ebooks I will pass on them too.

Ok, the people defending this nonsense are not thinking in prospective … Yeah, this would greatly help developers and companies like Activision… Sure it would help the consumer who buys new and trades it in to GameStop who then decides to give you less then what you paid for.. The negatives of a move like this, FAR supersede the positives … We are talking about 40 thousand (conservatively) JOBS lost world wide, 8 thousand or so now vacant buildings, never mind the ramifications this would bring to smaller developers that may not have mainstream sellablity thus effectively defunking them upon delivery. This also destroys a whole demographic of gamers (low-middle class/blue collar) since they simply will choose to go without over spending 60$ on a game they are not even sure is any good… This would effectively put Blockbuster and GameFly out of business and substantially stress the actual disc manufacturing industry since sales would be down ACROSS the board… Lets not forget the most important implication of a scheme like this, there will be NO PRICE CONTROL on games so, basically they can charge what ever they want ( $70,$80, $90) for games and there is nothing the market can do about it… If Sony and Microsoft go forward with this cockamamie idea, what we saw happen to Netflix will pale in comparison to the backlash this bogus idea would generate. There is one thing that bands a society of people together on a unilateral level and that is GREED, if Sony/Microsoft do not RUN from this idea the mere rumors alone will have dramatic implication on sales…Much like what happened to the Banks when they tried to set charges for having a debit card we need ( gaming community ) to send Microsoft/Sony a message, that we WILL not tolerate this kind of obnoxious greed on ANY level and if they do not back away from this idea we will spend our money elsewhere !

You guys are taking this the wrong way, with this decision comes better games, better prices, and more of them. I invite you to buy a newly released game for 60$, then right away go to Gamestop and see how much they give you, lets just say it isn’t even close to 60$…try 40$ or even 35$. Gamestop cheats the seller and they gain as the reseller.Sony is helping you out. And for the people that dislike the backwards compatibility sony is choosing, KEEP YOUR OLD SHIT, the used ps3 market will not just disappear, nor the ps2.

There won’t be a secondary market if game developers cannot afford to develop games.
This is in the best interest of the developers, why can nobody see that? How many companies have gone under this gen because of enourmous developing costs? It will be even more for next-gen, sony and m$ are just trying to protect developers by limiting re-sale

I bought a launch 20GB PS3 in 2006. It runs PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. It still works as well as it did on the day I bought it.

I haven’t found any defects. My recollection is production on these gems was halted because of costs, not defects. Please don’t spread misinformation.

Many of us still have our launch PS3′s, and we aren’t letting them go precisely because of the backwards compatibility. Tell me, seriously, if I want to play a PS1, PS2 or PS3 game, am I just supposed to have all 3 systems hooked up to my entertainment center? With the Wii, the DVD, the receiver, the music player, etc? How ridiculous is that?

i dont even know why the hell this matters if u have a ps3 right now and ur playin ps2 games on go kill urself lol. i have a ps3 and i cant play ps2 gamse on it cuz its the 2nd gen pr 3gen ps3 that its not compatible with the ps2 game unlike the first gen on ps3 and i would never ever play ps2 games on ps3 like why the hell would i do that? why did i buy a ps3 then if im gona play ps2 games i think theres nothin wrong with this idea but buying an used game and not be able to playin it without buying the licence again from ps store would suck cuz we all have to buy the same game like so many times.

How does Gamestop really undercut them? Gamestop one of the biggest retailers that sells their games, systems, accessories, and also advertises for their games. If companies want to find a way to make money off used games they can do things like sell store exclusive DLC after the games release and continue to sell online passes or some other way. I personally hated having to choose between which store to buy a game from because store A offered a exclusive map, Store B offered a exclusive weapon, etc….

Screw Sony, I’m a loyal Playstation fan and love my PS3. The only reason I didn’t get a Vita was because you could only have one account on it, and that just didn’t work for me. Now you’re telling me I have to buy two of the same game just so me and my brother can play it on our different accounts? I doubt I will be getting an Orbis if this is true, maybe the Wii U has more hope than I thought.

Either accept it or don’t buy what they are selling, again no one is forcing you to go along with them. If you think a certain brand is low quality do you buy it? Probably not. If you feel Sony and Microsoft are not doing things correctly, then don’t hand your money over to them, it’s not a difficult concept. And amazing how you find the need to buy into whatever the latest gaming system is, you think what they are doing is crap, but you probably are still going to buy it when it comes out. Makes no sense to me, if you are this unhappy about it, then keep your money and wait until something comes along that does what you want.

“Well this is flat out greed by Sony and Microsoft”, that’s a ridiculous statement. These are businesses, and what’s the purpose of a publicly traded business? To make money for their investors. If you had a business are you saying you wouldn’t try to be as profitable as possible? As for no backwards compatibility, do you miss not having a cigarette lighter in your new car compared to having it in your old one? We should be looking forward, accept what these companies are doing, if your unhappy about this, don’t buy their products(or stick with your original PS3), or start your own gaming console company. No one is holding a gun to your head to buy the latest gaming console, it’s your choice. If enough people don’t like the way companies are running things, they will see their sales tank, and investors will put pressure on the companies to change things, it’s that simple.

Well this is flat out greed by Sony and Microsoft, but having said that I’m not sure how much it bothers me. I usually don’t buy used games but the backwards compatibility is annoying. I’ve played PS1 games on my PS2, and both PS1&2 on my PS3 since I have an original, and it’s nice to have. A bigger question becomes, what happens to the classic games I bought on PSN like Final Fantasy VII, do I have to buy those again? I also feel bad for kids now that can’t swap games, used to be fun when I was younger to go to a friends house with my game, or them bring a game over. That’s life I guess, money ruins everything.

Did you mean that you traveled that you traveled 3 hrs 4 min 36.92 sec each day for 4 days? Also, assuming your method of transportation is one of those digging vehicles with the giant rotating cone-shaped screws, and that by “bore” you mean to make a hole or tunnel, if you are using your computer to put numbers in a comment and thus are not paying attention to where you are boring, and that there are at least 6 pedestrians in the way of your boring, then it should not take very many numbers to “bore 6 people to death.” ;)

They say it will be their last console until all their friends have it and they no longer have anyone to hang out with. Sony and Microsoft do something “undesireable” every year and the gaming industry is still growing larger every year. They will not only sell the same number if not more consoles with each release, but they are cutting out competition and will increase their revenue margins.

Will the Orbis be able to handle the new 4k TV’s resolution of 4096×2160? If not, why bother with it. Also, I remember how long it took the PS3 to catch up in game selection with Xbox 360. So once again why bother when you have to wait more than three years for a good selection to hit the markets.

Backward compatibility isn’t a big deal because the PS3 aren’t backward compatible already. That part would not be a change at all. Somebody mentioned that they’ve been playing since the NES days and would stop if this happens. I have news. Every. Single. Nintendo system has NOT been compatible with the previous system. With one exception, that I wish I could correct in another comment I made, is that SOME of the Wiis are compatible with Game Cube, but that’s only about a quarter of them, or less.
