I wouldn't mind if games were allowed to be downloaded digitally, that prevents me from making a trip to the stores. My issue though will be if there will be digital downloading if Sony will release the games for a cheaper price since we won't have the ability to bring the games outside our home. I looked on playstation4 dot net and they brought up some new information on possibility of PS4 having physical media.

There will likely be several games that are available through the digital distribution, which could open up a market for all types of niche games that were not profitable before, but I think what Kaz is saying is that big production games will always be available through physical media. http://sonyps4.com has been talking about the possibility of digital distribution as a market for smaller game developers as a way to break into the market and build an audience.

sorry, but why would you need to carry 500 discs with you anywhere unless you're planning to crash on to a deserted island? the thing with mp3 players...is no one needs to carry around 250gb of music, because realistically, they are only going to listen to 14-15 songs at any given time while they are out and about. so i don't see this as a disadvantage to physical media, more of an overkill on our part to think we need to carry around 80,000 songs on our ipod thinking we can listen to them all before the device even stops working 10 years down the road.

Digital distribution have proven very profitable for Apple, but it is because the end devices are designed exclusively for that. It limits your audience because it introduces a couple of obstacles (accounts, payments, internet access) for a great part of the video game demographic (kids). Which is why Nintendo relies on physical media and their sales (especially the DS) are a testament to that.

Physical media also has its bad points. Imagine you carrying a CD player with 500 discs instead of an iPod.
