If I had a dollar for each person who calls the Kinect an “obvious rip-off of the Eye Toy” I would be rich enough to afford a filter for that garbage.  It’s like saying that Avatar is a rip-off of Jaws 3D.  They aren’t similar in any single way other than the BARE BASICS of the ideas behind the technology.  Yes, Jaws 3D created a 3D effect.  But, nobody thought it was “Revolutionary” because the 3D sucked.  Same as Eye Toy.  Just because it had a camera that tracked your movements doesn’t mean that it is even in the same ballpark as the Kinect.

Give it a rest with the Eye Toy comparison.  Sega did online gaming on the Genesis.  That doesn’t mean that Sony and Microsoft are copycats with PSN and Live.  

It takes at the absolute minimum 18 months to develop A1 titles, the titles that sell your console. The titles that make people want to put up the cash and create the buzz that sell machines.  In actuality it takes 2 1/2 to 3 years to get these types of titles out the door.

What does happen, is the the console maker will have secret deals with major developers who have get the specs on the units and work on PCs until a few months before the unit comes out when they will have beta hardware to get the new titles working.

And just because a developer gets new console specs to develop early doesn’t mean they are going to throw everything at it. They know the sales numbers won’t be there on the new unit for a year. So do they put AwesomeShooterVII on the new platform or on the older one? And how much do they risk to find the right balance of getting their feet wet on the new platform and keeping stockholders happy with sales figures on the old one?

So, a new console in 6 months with no titles?  Suicide. Anger your loyal fanbase with no software who are being called suckers for being early adopters rather than waiting for games and the eventual price drop or do it right?

Sony and MS haven’t even decided what’s final in the new consoles and they both have been working on them. They are always working on the next generation because they have to be ready when the execs set the date.  Right now the engineers are looking at all sorts of factors like 3D TV sales as well as their competors.  Do they let special purpose code run on a CPU or GPU core? Add dedicated circuitry for it?  How much processing power should go into the next gen version of Kinect hardware taken the burden off the system.  The current Kinect came after the 360 was designed. The next one won’t. When do you decide the best possible system speed and memory size?  The last possible minute is when.

This article also made a lot of assumptions about how the most powerful hardware will guarantee success when history repeatedly rebuked that notion. Otherwise we would all be playing the Atari Jaguar or the 3DO today.

Why is the 720 projected to be more powerful than the PS4? The PS3 can outperform the 360 easily. Crysis 2 was said to max the PS3… due to terrible programming on a PPC architecture rather than Crytek’s x86/x64 niche with the PC and 360. Let’s see them compete at the same task when the two things are programmed by people that know the architecture they’re working with.

Will we ever have another FFVII, Super Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, The Legend Of Zelda: OoT, etc. with a motion controller? Nope. Mario Galaxy was somewhat close, but it wasn’t the epic new thing, just an uncomfortable way to play a polished SM64. Zelda:TP was much better on the Gamecube (with a standard controller). Let’s get back to controllers at home and leave the extravagant gear that requires me to have a 10′x10′ space cleared out in the arcades (if you want this crap, bring back the arcades, Japan has some amazing HD arcade equipment out there these days).

So in about 5 years, when the Wii U is still only holding casual gamers, and the 720 has been released too early again (Xbox 360, WIndows Vista, DirectX 10, Windows Phone 7, Zune… good job Microsoft), then Sony can go ahead and introduce the PlayStation 4 with the DualShock 4, and some games (and nothing else). We don’t need anything fancy, just give me a good game with the good old controller, and it will sell just fine.

 As consumers we can only speculate, observe and desire. Yet that is what drives our imagination to what could and shouldn’t be. We are not overwhelmed with budget and managerial responsibility so NO were not in the CEO of Sony’s office hearing whats really going on, but thats the fun of trying to grasp and foresee whats developing as time goes on. And who knows maybe they read these forums lol
