Sony leaks Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, SmartWatch 3

We might have focused too much on Sony's upcoming smartphones, but it seems that the OEM is also preparing a new tablet for IFA 2014 next week. Earlier revealed in a user manual for a charging accessory, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact might have once again been accidentally leaked by Sony, this time together with what may be its next SmartWatch.

Truth be told, Sony has been in the smartwatch biz long before Samsung got into the game or even Google dipped its toes in the wearable category. Sony's SmartWatch line, however, have been islands of their own, pretty much like Pebble and less like a full Android smartwatch like Omate TrueSmart or an Android Wear wearing LG G Watch. Not much is known about Sony's next smartwatch, though it is unlikely that it will be jumping on the Android Wear bandwagon just yet. At least we now know that it will be waterproof to some extent, at least based on this ad. That is, of course, if this is indeed the SmartWatch 3.

Also interesting is the tablet that's shown in the ad, a device that is considerably bigger than the largest smartphone in Sony's catalog, the Xperia Z Ultra, but still smaller than a 10.1-inch Xperia Z2 Tablet. The name Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact was spotted in a Sony user manual last week. Now we know it wasn't just a clerical error. As for the device's specs, it is now rumored to sport an 8-inch screen with Full HD resolution, carrying Sony's usual display technologies like TRILUMINOS and X-Reality engine. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, this time the higher 2.5 GHz variant, with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. An 8 megapixel rear camera with an Exmor RS sensor just about rounds up the basic features of this tablet.

Sony hasn't been notable for its tablets despite sporting decent hardware in the same premium design as its smartphones. Perhaps this compact tablet, its first "small" tablet, is yet another attempt to corner a piece of that market. Whether the Xerpia Z3 Tablet Compact will finally give Sony and Android fans a reason to root for their tablets, we will soon see at IFA 2014 in a few days.
