If you’re in Japan and you have your heart set on a new 60GB or 20GB PS3, our advice would be to head down to the shops asap. Sony Japan have confirmed that, following a final shipment of the two variants at the end of this month, it will cease availability and concentrate solely on the more-recent 40GB PS3.

Having admitted that the 40GB version is cheaper for them to produce - not least because it drops the PS2 backward compatibility of first-generation PS3s - Sony is hoping that profits from the console will rise sharply once the line has been pruned.
