Sony hacks open A7 camera to expose full-frame guts

Sony has taken a scalpel to the a7, chopping open its full-frame mirrorless camera to show off what's going on inside the unusual shooter. The video – which also shows the results of cutting a Vario-Tessar FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS lens in half like a sub – gives an inkling of just how crammed the camera's internals are.

That includes some careful routing of cables, bonding the grip to the body rather than just sticking it on, and the EXMOR CMOS which is actually mounted to the metal chassis of the camera itself.

Leave the camera together in one piece, meanwhile, and you can get some impressive results, as we found when we went hands-on with the a7 and its a7r sibling last year. Photographers have proved split on whether the duo are quite up to replacing a traditional DSLR, but Sony deserves kudos for at least trying something new.

Of course, the camera we're particularly intrigued about from Sony is the new a7s with its 4K vide output. That's not due to arrive until sometime this summer, however.
