Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X8 ships, Android 1.6 proudly on board

Fancy a brand new, Android 1.6 smartphone?  No, stick with us, because this is the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8, and it might be the budget handset of your dreams.  You'd need pretty limited dreams, it's true, but if a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel fixed-focus camera and Sony Ericsson's Timescape/Mediascape apps are appealing, this is likely to be the cheapest way to get them.  Now, Sony Ericsson says, the XPERIA X8 is finally shipping.

While the company does say the ageing Android 1.6 OS is going to get updated at some point, it doesn't have a public timescale for that to take place.  That could mean you get stuck with this old version for some time, and considering the speed and functionality improvements in Android 2.x that's not something we'd be content with, frankly.
