I’ve been saying it for a long time. The PS3 was priced too high when it made its debut. Naturally, like everything else, it was priced even higher when it finally was released in the UK. Was it actually priced too high? According to recent sales, consumers are saying yes.

PS3

The 40GB PS3 was recently launched in the UK with a £299 price tag, and the 60GB console had its price cut down to £349. That’s a hefty price reduction, as the console originally was sold in only one flavor (60GB) for £425. So what happened when Sony cut the price of the original model and released the much cheaper 40GB flavor? People were suddenly interested in what Sony had to offer.

Since the launch of the 40GB PS3, sales have increased 178%. That’s enough to put it ahead of the Xbox 360 on the UK charts. Time will tell if sales stay up, but I have a feeling that with the holiday season fast approaching, Sony is poised to do quite well.

I think you may be looking at it the wrong way. The 60gb sales have gone up. I believe that it isn’t due to the price of the 40gb. I think it’s because people are trying to snatch up the only ps3 with complete and full compatibility. I know that I, personally, bought my 60gb for just that reason. And now with things looking the way they are, it’s just easier to buy the 60gb than to deal with the 80gb or the non-compatibility that the 40gb offers.

I think that may be the correlation.
