Well, put all speculations to rest: Sony has announced that it will be using the recently-released High-Definition Multimedia Interface v1.3 specification, which was announced last week, in its upcoming Playstation 3 video game console. The new specification doubles the previous transfer rate (from 4.95 Gbps to 10.2 Gbps), allowing for 30, 36, and 48-bit color as well as a new miniature connector for portable HD devices. 48-bit color is the level at which humans can no longer distinguish different shades of color without assistance, meaning that the Playstation 3’s already-impressive visuals could be further enhanced by the addition of lifelike color.
