Sony demonstrated a 400-Disk Blu-ray player at CEDIA this year and, in all honesty, I’m flabbergasted. I was always able to understand those big CD players that store hundreds of disks or even the DVD players that do the same. But a Blu-ray player? I’m just not feeling it.

Now before you accuse me of being too harsh, consider the facts. Blu-ray has not yet effectively caught on yet. Sure, plenty of people buy movies in the format, but it’s not taking over DVD yet. Plus, there’s a serious possibility that the format will fade out before the average person would collect that many disks.

So is this just meant for those that have bought every single movie released on Blu-ray so far? Not necessarily. It could be meant for data backup, but that’s highly unlikely, considering each disk can hold 50GB and TB hard drives aren’t as expensive as they used to be. The only saving grace here is DVDs and CDs can be stored here as well.

But what about the 500GB Blu-ray drives on the horizon? A 200TB backup system would be quite amazing.
