Sonos Controller for iPad delayed until late September

Sonos' Controller for iPad app seemed too good to be true – a free, finger-friendly remote control for the wireless multiroom audio system that turned the Apple tablet into something Crestron owners would be jealous of – but it'll take a little longer than expected to arrive.  Initially promised for an August debut, the company has just informed us that they're postponing the release of Sonos Controller for iPad until late September.

"Delivering the highest quality products that exceed our customers' expectations has always been our mission at Sonos. Nothing less will do. Which is why we are postponing the shipment of our new Sonos Controller for iPad app until the end of September. We're disappointed, but know that the result will be worth the wait. In the meantime, customers can continue to use the Sonos Controller for iPhone app on their iPad." Sonos statement

The exact details of the delay have not been given, but we're assuming Sonos is working on perfecting the stability and functionality of the app before its public release.  The company has made its name on the intuitiveness of their UI – whether on dedicated Sonos remotes or their iPhone app – and releasing patchy software could undermine that.

As for functionality, Sonos Controller for iPad supports internet radio as well as various online streaming media services such as Pandora, Last.fm and Napster.  Track playback and volume levels for all zones can be controlled individually or collectively, and Sonos has promised the app will be free.
