Sonos Blue Note PLAY:1 limited edition jazz speaker arrives next week

Early this month, Sonos introduced its new Blue Note PLAY:1, a limited edition (a first from the maker) speaker designed to pay tribute to Blue Note Records and jazz in general, including the jazz legends that made it all happen. As you might have guessed, the Blue Note PLAY:1 is blue, but not in the static sense — it has a fade from dark navy to a lighter cobalt shade, something that results from both hand-painting techniques and, says Sonos, the "strategic use of robots".

Said Sonos' Vice President of Design, Tad Toulis, "We wanted to create an expression of Blue Note's singular style while embracing all the idiosyncrasies of a live performance. This mindset led us to the design solution – one which captures a singular moment in the act of creation." Evocative, yes?

The Sonos Blue Note PLAY:1 features a pair of custom drivers and dedicated amps, but Sonos is staying quiet when it comes to the hard specs. What we do know is that the speaker will be joined by a Blue Note on Sonos radio station, which is integrated into the Sonos app's main menu. With that, users can listen to three curated channels: Born in Blue, Artist Selects, and Blue Note 101.

All of that we've already known. The new info, though, is when you'll be able to get the speaker: on March 5. Those in the United States and Canada will be able to get it at 10AM PST for $250/$280 USD/CAD, while those in Europe will be able to get it at 10AM CET for £220/€250. And remember, it's a limited edition, so don't procrastinate if you want one. There will be about 2000 units available per continent/4,000 total.
