Although there have been a couple of external RAID arrays launched recently, none have been quite as slick as Sonnet’s new Fusion F2.  Despite the name, which sounds suspiciously like a men’s razor, it’s actually a 5.9 x 6.2 x 0.72-inch aluminum case containing two bus-powered 2.5-inch SATA II hard-drives for up to 1TB of storage.  Round the back, there are two eSATA ports rated for up to 3Gb/sec and a FireWire port that’s used for supplying power.

Either twin 320GB or, new, twin 500GB drives are available, spinning at 5,400rpm.  Sonnet claim to have tested multiple 7,200rpm drives on the market and found that despite the slower rotation speed their higher data density, faster interface and overall performance exceeded the faster models.

They also don’t require active cooling, either, which means the Fusion F2 is fanless.  The F2 can run in RAID 0 or RAID 1 setups and the new 1TB version is available this month, priced at $995.
