They use abs filament that costs around $60 for 2.2lbs(1kg) for the higher quality material. There are some DIY ways to recycle old abs into filament but they appear to cost several thousand dollars because the diameter can not have much variance or it will degrade the quality of the print. There are some makers working on a cheaper extruder kit that would produce usable filament for under $500, but they haven’t finished it yet.

That’s nuts! I didn’t expect them to come down to reasonably accessible costs for 5+ years. And the fact that most of the parts for a 3D printer can be made by a 3D printer is awesome. Machines making machines…wait that always goes wrong in science fiction, doesn’t it?
