It cost far too much to put equipment in orbit for this to be economically viable. When you can up equipment in geosynchronous orbit for $100/lb, let’s talk. Today it is closer to $50,000/lb.

Currently, there are all kinds of Alien technologies that have kept secrete in order to have private secrete wars. Those technologies offer even greater hope of meeting carbon free energy as abundant as the Universe. Why wait another decade?

Not a new idea, but it’s still a great idea. The biggest technological hurdle would be in just getting the damn things up there.

That said, the not-in-my-backyard-ers would never go for it. Too much fear of “zomg its a deathray!!11″, nevermind the simple fact that with the designs I read about over a decade ago you could camp out on top of a collector array and not even get so much as a sunburn.
