Units sold is more important to the executives.
To the masses, we only care about popularity and whether or not we want to jump on the bandwagon.
To the accessory makers and developers, it tells them who to build for.
As a relatively informed buyer, I am looking at specs, screen size and build quality. I could care less about popularity.

People literally root that their fav company comes out with something new so they can slavishly give them their money. None of these phones do anything new that you can’t do on your computer. Its amazing how easily the human mind is manipulated.

Lets look at this from a VERY LOGICAL perspective.

Apple DETAILED how many iPhones were sold.

Samsung DID NOT INDICATE how many smartphones were sold.

Hmmmm…. Let me think about that for just a moment…

Samsung did not have the courage to announce what it sold,
Apple proudly claimed IN DETAIL how many iPhones were sold…

Hmmm…. lets think again…

Samsung wants to PRETEND it sold more than Apple but it DID NOT say so.
Apple DID INDEED SAY SO…

Hmmm… yeah I can see where the confusion is.
Apple haters will take anything, any shot at demoting Apple from its rightful king-of-smartphones 1st place…
Samsung DID NOT have what it takes. Common sense tells us that IF INDEED sammy had sold more than Apple, they would be plastering that all over the world… But since they were cryptic and candid, that means they didnt want to show that they sold an embarrassing small percentage of smartphones compared to Apple, despite sammy ripping off everything from Apple.
