Hold a can of pepper spray up to your head whenever you talk. And make your phone bigger to boot.

Besides, you’ll probably have your phone out when you get mugged (since muggers prefer distracted victims) so it will be totally obvious to the mugger that you are taking something off the case. Whereas a separate can of pepper spray in a pocket can be pulled with one hand while you are distracting the mugger with the iPhone in your other.
