Here
are a lot of people that doesn’t know what they are talking about, I am sure
that most of them are just saying all of this just for reviews an videos they
have seen (I did the same too!), you actually have to use it (W8) for more than
just 5 min to realize that the Metro Start menu you will only see it for a
moment and that’s it, unless when you use your computer you stay staring at the
desktop all the time or press the start button stare at it too, then the Metro
Start will be a problem, because the only complaints are about the start
and not the rest of the metro UI. And about the people saying “MS is forcing me
to buy a Mac”, hey if you want a Mac just buy it nobody if forcing anyone to
anything you don’t even have to upgrade to W8 and if that people didn’t got a
Mac when Vista came out then W8 isn’t a good excuse considering OSX looks more
like iOS in every version (which is the reason I dint updated to Lion)

"if marketed properly" You know we're talking about MS, right? Ever hear of Windows phones?

Do you realise that if windows 8 tablets flop just as "hard" as vista... win8 tablets would actually be the most successfull tablets on the planet?

Contrary to what the media wants you to believe, the ipad really isn't THAT successfull. Since it released, it sold 65 million units (a lot of which are actually replacements for older units, so these aren't really individual sales either).

In the same timespan, windows vista was activated almost 200 million times. And by msft standards, that was a disaster.

For the ipad to continue to be market leader, windows 8 needs to be the worst selling microsoft OS in history.

It's pretty clear that this simply is not going to happen.

I wonder where you got your numbers...
The amount of downloads actually is more then DOUBLE of the downloads of win7 beta. And the 0.13% of windows 8 internet traffic is NOT of ALL devices connected to the internet, but just windows pc's. 0.13% of ALL windows pc's at this moment on the internet are windows 8 machines.

I have no idea why you try to downplay this, because this is a LOT more then windows 7 beta.

Windows 8 beta usage is more than double that of Windows 7 beta at the same period of time.

Do a search for it there are tons of headlines from when Microsoft announced that a couple of weeks ago.

Windows 7 will not be the XP of this decade. Windows XP (2001) went 5 years without an update to Vista (2006). Windows 8 is going to require a lot of people to upgrade because all of the new apps will be incompatible with older Windows PCs. If you try to stay on Windows 7 you will be cut off from all new WinRT apps and almost all new software developed for Windows. I don't think consumers will be content being cut off from the Windows app store.

If you had the choice to buy a Mac that could run all iPad apps in addition to Mac software or one that could only run Mac OS software what version do you think consumers would buy? Consumers would not continue to buy the Mac-only version.

Windows 8 is going to require a lot of people to upgrade because all of the new apps will be incompatible with older Windows PCs. If you try to stay on Windows 7 you will be cut off from all new WinRT apps and almost all new software developed for Windows. I don’t think consumers will be content being cut off from the Windows app store.

If you had the choice to buy a Mac that could run all iPad apps in addition to Mac software or one that could only run Mac OS software what version do you think consumers would buy? Consumers would not continue to buy the Mac-only version.

I don't agree, Icons serve the same purpose and they 'all' appear on the screen at the same time, I don't have to choose which programs I want front and center. If I want a widget to appear, I merely set that program to display the content that I want, leaving the rest of the screen open to display the icons for the content I have installed. The start screen serves a very valuable function that allows me to access the many different programs on the computer and to access those programs and functions intuitively.

Plus the lack of legacy support on ARM devices is not what Microsoft originally adverised. It was the idea of being able to install all of my programs rated to run on such a device that had me intrigued and excited about waiting for a fully functional OS on a mobile device. They failed to produce that product, therefore my interest in Windows 8 was greatly undermined, especially for tablet devices.

Microsoft hasn't lived up to people's expectations for the new devices they are adamantly trying to bring to market, and that is and will influence market valuation and consumer confidence.

They shouldn't be trying to do a 'so so' job that compete's with well established products and services, they needed to work on exceding expectations and bring to market something that surprises and excites the consumer. They are one of the only corporations in the world with the resources to do this and they droped the ball short of that mark.

Regardless of whether or not microsoft has created a functional OS, they have already fallen short of expectations, and that will have far reaching consequences in their ability to penetrate a market already saturated with an abundence of products. This isn't to say they won't be successful, only that they have seriously hurt there efforts and undermined the companies intent; which was to regain lost market share and reposition themselves as market leaders in a new, ever expanding arena of technological innovation.

They have decided to play catch up, instead of trying to jump ahead of the pack and do what they used to do best; Innovate. Innovate in a way that had people questioning the possibilities of future devices in the same way that surprised consumers when Apple released the iPhone in 2007, as Microsoft originally claimed they were going to do when questioned about being late to the scene. In my opinion the lack of good decision within the ranks of the corporation have damaged their ability to maintain market dominance.

Of course time will only tell, and I for one can't wait to see the outcome of this new development cycle. Not just for Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Rim, but for the many hardware development and distribution companies that seem to be locked into a death struggle over copyrights and production techniques as well.

I am a amazed why so many People are opposed to the metro start screen it is a windows screen with super sized rectangles and squares designed to be large so you can read the changing Data that some metro tiles contain if the metro tiles are too small a person wont be able to read the changing data. the second reason they are large is for touch screen operation so you more easily activate your
program or App with your finger. the metro start screen in the Windows 8 OS is a Screen that a Windows 8 computer user sets up to have their favorite Programs, Apps, Games DVD drives, ect easily accessed the moment the the Metro start screen is ready. This makes it easier for the windows 8 computer user to use the computer. Folks everything on the start screen is fast one mouse click operation. you do not have click the Metro desktop tile and go to the desktop to use a PC program, app or game. Folks just click the Metro tile for that PC program ,App , Games and ect that is on the Metro start screen and it will open desktop for you and then open the PC Program and ect that you want to use. Folks why is that so hard for People to do. What people who use Windows 8 have to do is set up the windows 8 Metro start screen with the metro tiles of your favorite pograms, Apps , Games, and ect in the order you want to use them and wow you are ready to go. Folks do not be afraid to use the metro start screen make the start screen work for you.

I want to love Windows 8, I have primarily been a Microsoft Windows user my entire life, only using Macs when I am forced too because of the lack of access to a real computer(sorry still prefer windows), this happens more often than you would think in my circle.

XP was a fantastic OS, I still have a computer that runs it.

Vista is why I still have a computer running XP and

Windows 7 has grown on me; I have come to like it more and more.

The videos, articles, and photos' I have seen regarding Windows 8 have been rather disappointing. I personally don't want Metro forced on me. Nor do I want Live Tiles and other junk where my program icons should be.

I am waiting to see the final version before making any sort of decision. But, as it stands right now; Windows 8 looks great for a tablet, not at all great for a PC.

I just hope that Microsoft is actually listening to this input, as it has spread from one end of the net-verse to the other, and it is generally the same.

What beta, the previews are only alpha's... The first preview was little more than Windows 7 with Metro thrown on top and the second preview was only a little further ahead.

The actual beta won't be released for another two months or so.

So we've yet to really see how it will all work and there's a lot more to Windows than just a Start Menu.

Besides, the main reason they're pushing Metro is for the tablet market and also because they need developers to start early on app development to get enough apps available for the actual launch date.

Especially for Windows RT for ARM as they won't be able to run legacy apps and so would be completely dependent on the WinRT based apps.

However, this doesn't mean they'll continue to ignore the traditional desktop. Bu we'll see for sure once the actual beta/RC get's released.

Will Windows 8 be the "Windows 98ME" version of it's time?
Look at history, heck you can go as far back as DOS if you want.
Dos 5, good, Dos 6 not so good
Windows 3 not so good, Windows 3.11 pretty good
Windows 95, ok, but Windows 98 Better
Windows 98ME bad, Windows XP good
Windows Vista...LOL, Windows 7 good
MS has a track record of every other release is good in the last 20 years.
