This might be a bit long, but I hope you will please read this entire story. About two years ago we got involved in a video game franchise that turned out to be a nightmare. We spent about 14 months - 65-70 hours a week seeking funds from all kinds of sources but to no avail. In the end we lost around $200,000.00 and had to file bankruptcy. I can't tell you what this did to us; especially now with things being the way they are fiscally and economically speaking. As head of the household this did a number on me personally, but I had to think quickly on what to do. This time we made a decision to go on our own with the little bit of funding we had; this time to create our own business selling Home Security Systems and Personal Protection Products. This time someone found us and wanted to partner with us and even fund our business and created a partnership, but our budget is still a bit tight. Our site is called www.renutechsolutions.com. I even took advice from our marketing web designer who helped us do our site to set up our own YouTube account and create video reviews of the very products we're selling. I only wish we would have done this 3-5 years ago. Just recently we purchased a used Mac Pro (Dual 3.0GHz Xeon Intel unit with a monitor). We couldn't afford a new one since we didn't have much for funds and started producing some videos. I come to find out that camera I was using wasn't HD and saved up some more funds to buy one used on ebay. Got a pretty good deal. We were on our way, then my used Mac Pro started acting funny. Strange artifacts started popping up on the screen. I figured it was the Graphics Card. When I took it to Apple they said it was the Graphics Card but they couldn't fix the unit because it was considered "unrepairable." Not knowing what this meant I asked them and they explained that the unit was out of warranty and that since it was never registered from when it was purchased (from the original owner) I couldn't get it fixed even if I wanted to. You can only imagine how I felt after that. Well, I called around and finally found a PC/Mac Repair Shop and brought in my Mac Pro to have them take a look at it. They too said it was the Graphics Card. Well, they replaced it with a better card for cheaper than I would have gotten it from Apple. I was very happy and brought my system home to reconnect everything and get going with my work. As I plugged in everything I made sure to ground myself (since static issues can happen from time to time). I started my Mac Pro and I immediately heard a big POP !!!! - then smoke !!!! I didn't want to freak out, so I immediately shut off my machine and unplugged everything and checked everything from top to bottom. I couldn't figure it out. So I restarted my system and nothing was working. I then disconnected everything again only to realize I connected my ONLY backup 2TB Western Digital My Book HD to my Mac Pro with a FRAYED (or should I say) broken FireWire connector. I NEVER in my life saw anything like this and found out that plastic piece inside the FireWire connector that separates all those little wires inside were NOW touching each other. I come to find out later that's what caused my power surge; since my external 2TB Western Digital My Book HD has it's own power supply and that is what caused the surge. I brought it back to my PC/Mac Repair person and he tested everything. He basically said I can't do anything - nothing is reading - the DVD player is gone, both your internal 300GB Velociraptor and external 2TB Western Digital My Book HD are FRIED and the logic board seems to be FRIED as well, but I really can't tell unless I do more testing. At that point I told him forget it and don't worry about it, I didn't want to spend more money on it. I wanted to cry; not so much that the Tower was fried but ALL MY 10 MONTHS of labor and work on my 2TB Western Digital My Book HD was GONE !!!! I didn't have the money to get somebody to help me repair or recover the information on it either. I did find someone for less money to recover it but it's still under testing. So here I am looking for a new system and wanted to protect myself this time by finding some kind of external system that could back up my stuff without creating this same situation again. My PC/Mac Repair person gave me some education on External Home Servers (or NAS systems). It's like a whole new world I knew nothing about. Well somehow I stumbled across your site (slashgear.com) to read this review and just when I was about to leave I noticed that you were giving one away. Well I thought I was already too late, but come to find out that today is the deadline. So here I am posting my story. I'm not here to beg for this system as I know there may be others out there more deserving, but I can't tell you this is EXACTLY what I'm looking for and much use would be into this server. I hope you will consider me for this and if you want to personally contact me you can directly email me at: lad@renutechsolutions.com. I'll even give you the very link to the Mac Pro that I had to sell (as is) on Ebay just so I could sell it for parts to gather some funds for another Mac Pro. Right now I'm using an old G5 Mac, but it can't do the rendering that I need to produce my videos as it takes about 2-4 hours to render a 10 min video or sometimes freezes the system. We are saving to get a NEW Mac Pro (this time we're going to do it with the FULL warranty). Again, I hope you will consider me for this HP Data Vault X510 and couldn't express my gratitude enough if we won this. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this entire post... Take care...

I am working on IT industry where taking backup of data is extremely important. Couple of months back we figured out a horrific loophole in our back up process. If any one of here worked on IT then they probably know that usually IT department take back up on daily, weekly, monthly basis. Same case is with our company too. Our company has SLA with client that they will keep the clients data for last 5 years. It works like that we have certain number of tape drive devoted to daily back up, some tape drives for weekly backup and same for monthly and annually backup. We take back up from unix file system. Clients backup system was designed to take backup daily in daily tape drives from unix file system. Client’s Unix file has retention period of 15 days. Weekly tape take back up from daily backup tape file every week. So we are covered for week. Similarly we take monthly back up every month. But we found out that monthly tape was taking backup from file system instead of weekly tape. Since we have unix file system retention period for 15 days so we lost 15 days data in monthly backup process. We found out this loop hole when client request some data from 2 years back and data was not there. Our client would have sued our company for not following the SLA (Service level agrrement) but since our company took over the project from some other company and we haven’t designed this process and haven’t touched that since we took our project. So client got agreed to not to sue our company. So whether is IT, corporate world back up is extremely important. I know the lucky winner will be chosen by random draw even then i am writing this big story. The reason for that to tell you importance of back up in real life. If i win HP datavalut then i want to use it with its full potential as I am IT professional and i know how take maximum benefit out of it.

Because the idea of an HP "Data Vault" and an HP "Giveaway" is a metaphysical paradox on the verge of a cosmological catastrophe - so you'd better resolve this quickly before all your users' heads implode or your site creates a singularity. Really, the only rational solution is to release said "Data Vault" into the protection of someone who understands the ramifications of ever placing such a significant device anywhere near the context of "a giveaway." And thus, by doing just that, you have summarily proven that this someone cannot possibly be you, so it must clearly be me.

I will expect my package shortly, along with a "thank-you" cake for saving all of your lives. I like spiral-cake.
