"On the downside, all that reliance on the cloud means you have to be connected to the internet to get a lot of things done."

Right now, I'd say this is a huge issue. The infrastructure isn't in place. In a sense this solution is more of 'ball and chain' than even a desktop computer as far as flexibility and portability.

"Each will be offered as a 3G version."

I'm glad that wifi-only devices are being sold now. The smartphone-only (ie, required data plan) for Android is a complete disaster for those of us who only want a mini-computer on our hands. Apple's got the iTouch and Android has nothing comparable except a connection to Telecoms bleeding us dry.

"The 3G versions will get 100MB of bundled Verizon data every month."

I've been in a situation where I needed to watch my usage. Converted my browser into text-only, static-html (no images, no plug-ins, no JS, NO ads). 100mbs wasn't nearly enough. It would have been enough in the late-90s but there's just too much garbage associated with content these days.

"Specs? Can a proper OS be loaded?

A lot of us might consider just buying the machines if the specs are good enough to install alternative OSes. From the little I've read, it seems these machines don't really have the processing power you can get today from similarly priced laptops.

A bust? No... Google is the first *major* company to implement a pure cloud solution. Being first gives them a chance to iron things out. When the infrastruture and mindset of users (especially business and education) begin to accept this new paradigm, Google will have a much more polished offering on their hands.

I wouldn't be surprised to see even developers connecting remotely to shell accounts in the *future* loaded with hundreds of thousands of dollars of tools and services. I used to do this back in the mid-90s - DOS floppy connecting to a Unix Shell account via Telephone to access more powerful apps for freelance work. It was fast, convenient and the more powerful servers did the lion's share of the work.

The cloud could eventually be a very powerful extension with petabytes of personal data available to the user and the ability to do anything we do now on our local systems.

There are a lot of forces at play now (competitors, government intervention and spying, issues with hackers, data caps, etc..). We'll have to see how this plays out in the next few years.

So if I want to play a game like NFS or something, does that mean I have to load it up from the cloud every time I switch on the system? I'm on 15GB a month on boring old "ADSL" ,that wouldn't be much fun for me when I reach my data limit..... & it's all browser biased? Like is the browser the OS itself or what? Can I diminish this "OS browser" to find a desktop underneath?
