Skype adds video calling support to Android app

If you are an Android packing Skype fan, a new update for the Android app is available now. The update adds in a key feature that a lot of people have been wanting for a while now. The new feature is video calling. The app will let Android smartphone users make video calls between Android devices, between Android and iPhone users, and directly to PCs, Macs, and TVs. The app also supports all the other features you expect from Skype.

You can place and receive voice calls from around the world to land lines and mobile phones. You can also send SMS messages to anyone in the world at Skype rates. Along with the video calling, the app also gets a redesigned user interface complete with a mood message box so you can warn people that might want to talk to you if you are grumpy. The interface will also give links to check account balance and makes it easier to sort your contacts.

The app requires an Android phone with Android 2.3 or higher with a front facing web cam. Skype calls out the handsets initially compatible as the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S. Support for additional handsets is in the works. The new app should be available right now.
