Guess what, Galaxy S2 dosnt even need u to touch it for sending msg’s, finding maps, searching things on net or placing a phone call..You just say “Hi Galaxy” when the app is in driving mode and vola, you can ask your phone to do your task for you.. 0 (ZERO) secs off my steering wheel..Zero % chances of mishap..

Only VLingo has true “In Car” button pushless interaction in your vehicle the moment you dock it and ONLY on Android. The reason? Very simple, only Google has Voice Turn by Turn. Right now, only VLingo on Android will be able to offer Auto Insurance Discounts for those that have it installed on particular carriers and installed on Android! ;-) ….lower rates is what will give VLingo the upper hand on Android! ….and we all know Apple, since the bought Siri out from under Android and Blackberry’s will find some reason to kick all these other Voice personal assistants out of App Store fearing the competition could dam well be better!!!

Far from innovative, Siri had just been out about 2 months on App Store when they announced ports to both Blackberry and Android. That’s why Apple chose to jump in and buy it. Even over far superior VLingo that had “In Car” for Android out and none for iOS. The revolution of voice recognition personal assistants goes back through 20 yrs of history, but it can all be summed up and only worthwhile on a few applications that bring out more than being simply entertaining.

After all, Guru on Google Laps can be that. Just add a voice recognition program and a voice to the existing Guru and you have all the personality of Siri and more. It also knows 42 is the answer to the Universe and Everything in it. There are buckets of human like interaction and the ability to give you weather and keep appointments, contacts, phone numbers, etc. But that won’t impress you like running Agendus on Palm, iPhone and Android (coming to all these platforms). There are far more of these programs out there than Apple fanboys want to admit.

My personal pick is VLingo and it’s “In Car”, but that hopefully won’t ever incorporate the king of the hill Google maps, Street View and Voice Turn by Turn…… everz! …..that would be the one thing that google could do that would send me to another platform. Opening up Street and Voice Turn by Turn to the ingrate arrogant morons that will never fully appreciate what Google offers even it’s competitors. But by giving these truly awesome features to these bosstards will kill any loyalty I have towards Google!

Protips: I saved a ton of money and time not waiting in line by just saying Siri before using the voice prompts that android has had for ages. Instead of just saying “Listen to Led Zepplin”, I just say “Siri, Listen to Led Zepplin”. It save hundreds and you don’t get stuck with the negatives of iOS.

Honestly, does anyone really use the voice controls after the 1st week of playing with it and showing it off to their friends? I don’t see this as being significant in the future for either OS.

Yeah, Siri is Beta, which begs the question. Why is apple selling phones with beta software on it? I assume it’s because Apple didn’t want the greeting cards feature to be the only stand out feature. At least that made it out of beta.
So really one question remains. When has it ever been acceptable for a company to sell a finished product with it’s main feature in Beta? I’ll answer it for you. Never has it been okay. If you Apple were to release with Siri and call it Gold then they would face the scrutiny of selling half baked software. Apple has the reputation of selling finished and well polished products. So releasing as Beta is Apples only way to justify their desperate attempt to stay the ultra cool hip Apple that is leading the innovation by leaps and bounds. Seems like Apple has reached Critical Mass. I wonder if they can right the ship as it has definitely started to lean.

There’s no technical reason why Siri couldn’t run directly on your Mac notebook using the microphone.Nothing magical is happening in the iPhone 4s to recognize speech; all the heavy lifting is happening the cloud.

What about Vlingo? Is that just chopped eLiver? Mind you, Siri, along with many of the 200+ “new features” no the new iTurd are just Apple playing catch up with the much faster moving Android development market. Apple is genius, though. They manage to use outdated, crappy hardware, rip off apps, and be the “visionary market leaders”, because they make it look nice (on a much smaller display that looks like crap, btw).

This is an interesting package and the iPhone has a nice camera, but Android has had a workable voice control app for some time and I prefer my S2. I can’t imagine converting to any Apple device.

Except that Siri’s NLP actually happens server side. And with the ICS announcement last night, Android has taken the real, non-gimmicky lead in NLP. Android can now convert speech to text on the *client* side, so it can start converting words as you say them rather than waiting until you’re done speaking to batch recognize them.

Sure, you can’t tell your Android phone to book a flight for you or whatever, but we’re seeing that Siri doesn’t necessarily work that well for that kind of thing anyway. In Android, you can do search via voice from anywhere on your phone, and it’s integrated into the system keyboard as an alternate means of text entry, so you can use it for any text you want to enter.

But it really shouldn’t be that big a surprise that Google is better at this sort of thing — Google has a ton of brilliant voice researchers and has been working on this stuff for years. Apple bought a startup because they don’t have their own in-house folks to invent stuff like this.

Well, Siri was developed in the US in California, of all the accents in the world, that’s the easiest for her to understand. I live on the east coast of the US in an area that’s pretty accent-neutral, however I have a slight accent compared to people there. If I think about how people in the UK speak, Euros does sound like you’ll rose to me too.

Siri’s parents had an accent, is what it basically boils down to.

I believe Siri works by transcribing your spoken information first, then executing a search on apple’s servers.

Give that, you would think it to be very little-1kb max. Per transmission but then again, I can’t say for sure.

Playing with my Friends 4S got us to the inevitable conclusion it doesn’t work in the UK. At all! How it can mistake the word “Euro” for “You’ll Rose” is beyond me. And I have very little accent, most people at work think I am well spoken for a midlander.

Good article though. But I am not leaving my Android phone just yet. Not on what I have seen from Siri, and TBH that’s the only thing that might get me to drop android. By the time it works Google will probably have beefed up their voice recognition in Android anyway.

I notice you have taken the UPTO 2x computational speedup and UPTO 7x graphics rendering speedup out..

The reality is, it’s Apples benchmarks, so you know it will be mostly bullshit. Like on one particular WebGL instruction, it was 7x faster, but the rest of the time is was mostly the same, but technically they can say upto 7x faster, and the braindead Apple idiots will fall hook line and sinker for it.

Funny thing is Android has had this tech for a few already. Ever try Speak To It? Its also FREE, can do almost all of what is shown here, with the funny responses and you can talk to an avatar that you decided the look. Also, instead of holding down a button for two seconds, i can tap the icon and bam, done. No hands of the wheel for more than a sec. As for your next step, sorry to say i think it might have been backwards. Best of luck with that! Ill keep my state of the art tech over an already done called new software :-)

This is true, but the point of fact is that SIRI is about SOFTWARE, not Apple or iPhone specific hardware! Apple had to absorb the maker of Siri into the fold and then pull it from the general app store in order to make it an Apple exclusive. It had nothing to do with Apple engineering in reality…

actually siri is more like an AI engine whereas google just allows specific key words. World of difference.

AI is not really that simple to make, the research project which siri came from was more than 5 years in the making.

Processing natural language might seem like an easy task but it’s one of the most complex computer science project known.

While I understand the location based abilities being a let-down (one you clearly had to know about) – I’m surprised you didn’t try the other abilities such as creating text messages or making appointments or reminders. I’m driving in my car, listening to music, I hold the home button for 2 seconds, the music mutes, and I send a text message to my wife while not taking my hands off the steering wheel. I ask Siri to read it back to me, I do revisions and send it without touching the phone once. I come from droid and this is truly the next step. Sorry it didn’t work for you but when it does (and I’m guessing by then it will be capable of doing even more) I hope you re-review it. I could not be happier.

On a side note, you can choose the accent, voice type (male or female), etc etc for Google Navigation (and all Google Text-To-Speech functions). So you can have a rather robotic James-bond voice today if you can extract yourself from Apples’ trendy posterior.

If Siri had worked as I’d hoped it would, then yes, I probably would’ve bought an iPhone 4S to keep. Having used it as-is, I’m sticking with Android for the moment, but I’ll be keeping an eye out on how Siri develops, certainly.

Apple is desperately trying to catch up to Android at this point. My Epic Touch 4G understands voice commands very well and the speech recognition is amazing. The ability to catch every single word I say and turn it into text without a mistake, even in very long sentences, is awesome. I can make calls, send emails, texts, search the web all via voice command.

Once again, an Apple product is underwhelming, yet the fanboys proclaim Jobs a genius and his products superior.

Agree regarding iTunes on a PC- it is bog slow on both my Lenovos. It seems a lot faster on a Mac that I’ve tried, so maybe it’s an Apple ploy to get those who are enamored with iOS devices to switch to a Mac. However, iCloud promises to eliminate the need to sync with a computer most of the time.
