You saw the pre-iPhone Android screenshots, right? It looked like a Blackberry OS ripoff. Don't kid yourself. Google has never done anything original. The only way they've gained popularity is by doing better in whatever industry completely sucks at the moment. While at the same time mining all kinds of data from people and making money off that. Makes me sick.

As much as I support google over apple, these statements are a bit misleading. Google is the default search engine on all IOS devices and apple doesn't have their own search algorithms. Therefore, Siri is most likely getting it's backend information from a google query which tells me that google is benefiting from this anyways.

Wow, how much is this a fanboy statement?

Explain to me what Android has copied from apple? Because, to me, it sure seems the other way around.

-wifi hotspot
-drop down notifications
-even Siri is just an upgraded version of the voice actions google has had for over two years
-android hardware is always ahead
-they multitasked from the beginning, apple still doesn't really. I am not saying that this is a copy from android as I am aware that BBOS and WM6.5 also multitasked first

The list goes on. I haven't even gotten into the cornucopia of things android can do that apple still cant. That list doesn't not go the other way around.

You need to read up bud.

Siri is a novelty feature like voicemail. It will be dead in no time. Besides most people listen to music or podcasts on their phone when idle or waiting. a few screen presses get the weather and 5day forecast with UN-interrupted music. Thats bliss.

Being on the board does not give anyone (however technically knowledgeable) the in depth information and understanding to simply take over in speech recognition and comprehension; in any company. Which is why these systems clearly work in different ways.

This branch of technology has been in development for decades, in several companies and research centres around the world. A number mobile technology companies, including Google and Apple, consider it ready for public development in the mobile space.

"Expert systems", designed to respond in context (in the case of Siri, with a persona) are gathering data, so that developers can reshape and refine them - which is a huge task. We, as consumers, by using these systems, are (effectively) part of the development process. But it is still work in progress, with a LONG way to go. Android incorporated speech recognition long before Apple bought Siri, partly to compete with it. Voice recognition was already deeply implemented in the android OS when Siri was announced.

All these systems require extensive external processing; to make sense of, and respond to, our speech. Just how much "intelligent" speech recognition and interaction will dominate future mobile technology is unclear; but I welcome any work, by any company, or academic research team, that improves it.

If you thought you needed to be on the board of Apple to figure this one out then you are really behind the times. Siri is not an apple invention, it was purchased in an anybody who follows tech knew about it.

The problem with Eric is that plans for Siri were hatched out after he was booted out of Apple board. So they can no longer be one step ahead of everyone else in copying Apple. One has to only hear from Andy Rubin, (Eric's head honcho on Android, who benefitted the most from him being on Apple's board), who claims no one needs SIRI like functionality on a phone, to really see the frustration that Google has on being kicked out of Apples board.

So this double speak by Andy Rubin and Eric Schmidt reeks of hypocrisy. Google is trying to blow dust into the eyes of regulators.
