Onkyo and their premium line of Integra product are issuing firmware updates for current line of A/V receiver and processor that utilizes Silicon Optic Reon HQV. It’s not available to public or downloading online and owner is required to sign a waiver, fax the paperwork and they will send you the updater in the mail.

Silent Firmware Update from Onkyo & Integra

The executable updater will run on Windows only via RS232 connector in the back. It fixed black level issues, OSD and added Picture controls to Reon HQV. There are additional unconfirmed hardware updates required works done on authorized service center. If you have the following products from Onkyo/Integra and the display feature is lacking picture controls, it’s time to give them a call.

Onkyo and Onkyo Pro, TX-SR875,TX-NR905,PR-SC885P

Integra, DTR 8.8, DTC 9.8

I contacted Onkyo about this firmware update and they say the DTR 8.8 does not need any updates. What do you know about this issue

James, Yes it does and i happened to have a copy of it along with 9.8 and Onkyo Pro 885.

I’ll be glad to help you out bu first you need to check if yours is already shipped with latest FW

When did you receive the unit?

What’s you fw version? Press & hold ‘display’ on the unit (not remote) then press ‘power’ button. (latest should be v1.05)

Do you have Reon picture control on you unit? Press and hold ‘display’ for several seconds, do you see picture control setting like contrast, brightness, color…etc?

BY the way, i did some digging.

The latest FW for DTR 8.8 is

MAIN: 1.05/07927A - you should see this display on the screen (unit)
If you use the tuner ‘next button to navigate, you should see more FW version on other components.
    DSP1: SR8051 07601A
    DSP2: SR8052 07518A
    DSP3: SR8053 07820B
    HDMI: 1.01/07706A

    Dan -

Do you know what was included in the 1.05 update?

My TX-SR875 is at firmware level 1.04, and I am wondering if it is worth the bother to update. (I’m thinking I’ll wait ’till v.1.06 comes along.)

  5.  Daniel Lim   View all comments by Daniel Lim  +1  Add karma Subtract karma Quote

Not all firmware has the same version.

875 latest firmware is 1.04, it was updated from 1.02. 1.05 is probably used in DTR 8.8. So you are fine.

The updated firmware fixed ‘Reon’ video issues, it’s critical as it altered the picture black level. They also included picture settings along with the updates. I believed it added more delay time settng for Lip sync as well. (that’s if you have lip sync problem)

HW side, HDMI chipset also get updated for better hand-shake.

(Thats’ weird! The rest of my message, above, got cut-off after quoting..)

Are you saying that units that shipped with 1.04 installed have updated HDMI chipset *hardware* installed?

  8.  Daniel Lim   View all comments by Daniel Lim  Neutral  Add karma Subtract karma Quote

    Geoffrey,

Yes, if you have 1.04 shipped unit, then you should have the latest hw and sw.

Ps. HW Update for 1.04: HDMI 1.00/07517A -> 1.01/07706A. It only upgradeable at authorized service center as it required hw part.

how do you tell what firmware version your 875 has loaded?

  10.  Daniel Lim   View all comments by Daniel Lim  Neutral  Add karma Subtract karma Quote

FYI: All units shipped from last 2 months probably have the latest fixes.

This should be standard for onkyo/integra.

On you receiver (not the remote) Press & hold ‘display’ button on the unit then press ‘power’ button.

Does anyone know if the firmware update would fix a video sync (video drop) problem? I have been testing a Onkyo 905 (only because I couldn’t get my hands on a Integra 8.8) and I have several video drops when advancing chapters on a blu ray, when blu ray movies are loading, and when changing DSP setting (for sound only but video drops for a few seconds as well)…. This is not happening on the Denon 4308ci that I’m testing, but I don’t want to make a decision based on this issues if Integra/Onkyo has fixed the problem with their latest firmware.. Please help.

  14.  Daniel Lim   View all comments by Daniel Lim  Neutral  Add karma Subtract karma Quote

    Tross,

If you still have the 905 in trial period, chances are you are having the latest fw, and probably the 1.06 that just released to enable audyssey pro.

The older 1.05 has 3 parts of updates, one of them is hw update with newer hdmi chipset that said to improve hdmi handsake espcailly with certain hd-dvd players. But that have to be done via service center.

The Onkyo has a noticeable short a/v drop issue only when you’re switching source, the company explain the delay is designed to avoid possible sudden audio distortion like popping when toggling source. While one could possible experience longer drop when switching source with different Format like 720p /480i if you have the hdmi out on onkyo to specific format instead of ‘though’, Onkyo says it’s unavoidable due to prolong video preprocessing.

Mine experiences short drop while changing audio format on the source player or movie loading like yours does, i can tolerate that, it doesn’t bothers me. But, yours happen while switching chapter is odd, which BR player you got? i have a 9.8 and my buddy DTR 8.8 doesn’t seem to do that.

    Daniel:

I have the Onkyo PR-SC885P with firmware 1.01/07615L

Are you saying I will need new hardware as well as a firmware update?

    Thanks.

  16.  Daniel Lim   View all comments by Daniel Lim  Neutral  Add karma Subtract karma Quote

    KP,

i’m not sure how you get the 1.01 version, engineering sample? The least i’ve heard is v1.03 on first shipment.

Does it shows 1.01 while you hold ‘display’ and click on power button or you’re in update mode ?? update mode always indicate the based fw of 1.01 while display and power combo indicate the most current fw.

    Daniel:

Oops–you were right. I was seeing update mode. I have FW 1.02/07625A. Mine was one of the first shipped for sure. Are you saying it needs some hardware mod?

  18.  Daniel Lim   View all comments by Daniel Lim  +1  Add karma Subtract karma Quote

    KP,

    Yes, but depend on you.

1.04 - version issued on this article has 3 parts of updates,
    1) self-upgradable - software - adds Reon video control and resolved bug on black level.
2 & 3) hardware, only upgradable via service center,
hdmi board to improve handsahke issues

if you don’t have issues with hdmi handshake, then try self-upgrade to get the Reon behaves correctly. Otherwise, send it to Onkyo service center for the whole deal. The only problem is they have limited service center national wide.

At present, they have at least 1.05 (enabled audyssey pro) and probably 1.06 already. Last time i checked with Intergra support, they only admited 1.04 eventhough i told them mine is loaded with 1.05. You see what i meant about silient update huh, they suck.

Just so I understand - are you saying of my 905 has MAIN firmware 1.05, I have Audyssey PRO installed? My 905 was 1.02, and I successfully upgraded to 1.05

    Thanks

1.06 is the most recent firmware…. but you wouldn’t know it from Integra/Onkyo support. And unlike earlier firmwares you CANNOT get access to it to update it yourself — which, as you have seen, is pretty darn easy, quick, and painless.

    In fact, on might say:

Wow, this lack of easy access to updates is looking like pretty bad PR for Onkyo/Integra. It is GREAT that they are creating improved firmwares. It is HORRIBLE that they have stopped making them available to users, and require us to spend $100 round trip and risk shipping damage and be without the unit for a couple of weeks, just to take care of something that we could do in our own home in 15 minutes.

    Ugh!
