I think it totally makes sense for Nokia to maintain the S60 and Maemo. For someone like me, where I always have more powerful computers around, S60 makes much more sense because I just want a smartphone, with the emphasis on Phone. Having Email, multi-touch, apps, and etc. are great, but no iPhone, S60, or Maemo device will ever replace my Mac; hence the phone-centric nature of the S60 works out great!

However, in developing nations is where the computing-centric Maemo comes in really handy, when the device is also your computer and internet access device!

Nokia just needs time to polish the S60 and Maemo, really work on Ovi, and the development of apps for Maemo and S60 by using QT (Like how apps run on both iPhone and iPod-Touch) They can still totally keep their edge and keep Apple at-bay. In short, Nokia (if you're listening) NO MORE trying to get into the mobile services biz, buying up mobile startups only to shut them down/resell them the next day. Instead, just be focused again on YOUR devices and software and you'll be fine!

I find it a bit strange that anyone who calls themselves a "research director" would still be talking about S60 with regards Nokia's future plans.

Neither S60 nor Maemo as it currently exists is destined to live very long. Both Nokia's Symbian and Linux platforms are getting shiny new Qt UIs. Or perhaps the problem is you just don't realise there's a difference between Symbian the operating system and S60 the UI.

Is your Conclusion "Maemo Linux could be that thing, but it isn’t yet, and it doesn’t look like Nokia really wants it to succeed broadly." was merely based on missing SEND or END button? or the navigation of menu's being inconsistent?

The blogs, reviewers & authors these days are usel**s(sorry i couldn't stop myself) & doesn't have a strong reason & information & rationale to construct their article to conclude things.

In the beginning of your article : "Iphone keeps adding new features" Yes it is true, but donot say this is the point you took to compare the business success of Iphone over Nokia.. But you did. Ridiculous! This is simply nothing but a pure fanboy'sm or may be you are attracted to Job's/bitten-apple company to write like this???

If the "change" is what the mantra of Success, then Nokia is doing pretty well..and far better than Iphone. Fruitphone only adds the feature(changing color/look of an application with flashy items for 1000 times doesnot mean Iphone has quantity of applications). Do we know how many designs/new looking/facelift devices comes out of nokia everyday...or how many features do they hold or do we know how many patents does Nokia hold? Adding, designs are meant to be outdated...like cars & girls...So is the change..this attitude of consumers or we as a humans has been here since we were primitives..
And I see Nokia has mastered the "art of change" pretty well than any (yes Nokia slept for a while, which is costing them now)

Maemo by Nokia is a wise move, inline to mantra "The Change", which is what consumers need(100 million smart phone so far).
Let me write a conclusion(which is missing above) on your behalf for this article..
"Nokia doesn't seem to abandon Symbian, but "Changing". Which is what we all need and Nokia too. All the best to Nokia."

Yes. The subtitle of the N900 press release is, "The new Nokia N900: Computer-grade performance in a handset." Handset = phone. Beside,s it *is* a phone. It makes phone calls. Previous Maemo Linux products did not have cellular modems and were called "Internet Tablets."
