Shipments of mobile devices to double by 2014

Here we are in the closing weeks of the first decade of the new millennia and so far, the change in the tech word has been insane. We have come a long way with much cheaper, faster, and more portable computers than we had to start with early in the decade.

ABI Research has issued a new report that predicts the number of mobile devices that shipped will nearly double by 2014. In 2009, the total number of mobile devices shipped is estimated to be 1.2 billion. ABI figures in 2014 there will be 2.25 million devices shipping.

Mobile devices as a category include netbooks, mobile phones, MIDs, cellular modems, and other consumer electronic items. The shipments of cellular modems in particular is expected to boom with 67% growth during the 5 year span.
