Shimano CM-1000 Sports Camera brings 16MP sensor and 1080p video

Shimano has rolled out a new entrant for the action camera market, the CM-1000 Sports Camera. This tiny camera is akin to the GoPro and Sony's Action Cam, and though aimed at cyclists in particular it has enough features to meet a variety of rugged and sporty needs, among them being a durable case and 1080p video recording.

As far as the camera's rugged features go, it has a waterproof body that can go to depths of ten meters, and is also dust-resistant to a lesser extent. The unit itself weighs in at 86 grams, which includes the battery and memory card, making it light enough to clip to a helmet or such and then forget about. The battery is a 950mAh offering, which Xataka reports as lasting a couple hours for recording and requiring four hours to charge.

The camera itself has a 16-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, which allows for recording in three modes: 640 x 360/240fps, 1280 x 720/120fps, and 1920 x 1080/30fps. Not bad, as far as action cameras go, providing a slow-motion option for those who need it. Videos are MPEG4/H.264, and there's stereo sound.

The unit doesn't feature any internal memory, but supports up to a 32GB micro SD card. The lens allows for recording in 135-degree and 180-degree FOV with a max aperture of f/2.0. There is no display on board, with the Sport Camera instead featuring three status-indicating LEDs. As expected, Shimano will offer several accessories for it, as well. The camera launches in May for about $300.
