As for the oversized ear-muff headphones and what not, well maybe it was a design choice to incorporate the necessary weight for the counterbalance. 

…Or maybe they just wanted it to look like some kind of retro SciFi tech.

I know they can make it much more streamlined….(the motion sensors in an iPhone are very small). Also, no need for the giant headphones or eyepieces.
