Sennheiser and Phonebloks team up

Phonebloks, the concept catapulted by Google into the initiative Project Ara, has partnered with Sennheiser, the audio company best known for its headphones. With this partnership, Sennheiser will provide "audio expertise" related to audio and speech transmission.

Phonebloks is the modular phone concept that spawned Google's Project Ara handset, which uses component modules that can be swapped out for new components. The handset's audio, in particular, will be developed in conjunction with Sennheiser's technology, but specifics on the partnership haven't been detailed.

Said Sennheiser CEO Daniel Sennheiser, "Phonebloks has excited millions of global enthusiasts within a very short space of time. From the outset, we have found this forward-looking idea compelling, and we believe that it sets a trend for the future. Moreover, this initiative clearly matches our own understanding of sustainable, forward-looking investments."

It was recently revealed that 3D Systems, the company set to produce the modular phone's components, is working towards the use of conductive inks for 3D-printing functional modules. The company is also developing a continuous motion printing system for rapid production.
