Today’s the big day for Apple fans waiting for Steve Jobs to take the stage and finally reveal all the “magical” details of the much hyped iCloud. Unlike the competition, Amazon Cloud Player and Google Music Beta, Apple has actually secured licensing deals with music labels and could offer up something much more comprehensive and appealing. Add to that iTune’s already secure first place lead in the music download arena, makes it one cloudy day for rivals.

I’m drawing this just hours before the keynote, and who knows how it may turn out. But there’s certainly a chance for showers and thunderstorms for the competition, if the new service lives up to the hype. Although Apple, in an unusual move, revealed the topics on their agenda, which will also include iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion, there’s still so many details that remain unknown. Keep up on the developments with our LiveCast for all the WWDC 2011 and iCloud news.

I love the Android robot, so hopefully Google will get him an umbrella soon and step up their music offering, which at the moment feels half-baked. But, it is only a closed beta right now, so a lot could change. If you’ve already gotten your invitation for Google Music Beta, we’d love to hear what you think.

The much hyped Apple Store 2.0 10th anniversary retail revamp didn’t quite deliver the magic and revolution folks were anticipating. The top secret operation was rumored to bring NFC-enabled registers, interactive iPad 2 signage, and even some ginormous sale among other endless possibilities. And although the use of the iPad 2 as new interactive product signage turned out to be true, the execution was rather underwhelming.

A common observation among folks visiting the refreshed store was that the new abundance of iPad 2′s all over the counters created more cord mess in most instances. The iPad 2s were placed in a special acrylic casing that held it at an angle and also allowed it to connect to power via a flat cable. Wherever there used to be a product info placard, there’s now an iPad 2.

Considering the shortage of iPad 2s around the world, with online orders still 1-2 weeks out and various suppliers blamed for the production bottleneck, it’s interesting to see all these iPads suddenly flood the stores. However, the change does improve the queuing system for customers to get a hold of an Apple specialist, especially when the stores are busy. If you’ve visited the new Apple Store 2.0, let us know how you like it.

Last week’s Google I/O kicked off the first keynote with an image on the big screen of an adorable Android robot ready to swallow an apple, bringing laughter to the crowd of 5000 attendees. This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve seen shots taken at the bitten apple logo, which being an inanimate and already injured fruit has very little means to defend itself. Apple probably won’t be fighting back with its own cartoon, but they could bring some major announcements at next month’s WWDC to take a bite out of Google’s recent developments.

According to recent reports, Apple’s iPhone 5 may make a November appearance, while an iPhone 4S for carriers Sprint and T-Mobile may arrive in September. This leaves next month’s WWDC without a phone to announce, bringing many to believe that the focus will be on the rumored Apple iCloud, which may completely replace MobileMe, bring iTunes to the cloud, embarrass Google’s recently launched Music Beta, and attempt to “magically” revolutionize the industry in some way or other. Additionally, iOS 5 and the new Mac OS X Lion will most likely be unveiled as well.

Google announced Android Ice Cream Sandwich to come in Q4 2011 that will unify the platform and eliminate the need for the separate smartphone and tablet versions we currently see with Gingerbread and Honeycomb, respectively. Ice Cream Sandwich, besides sounding delectable, could alleviate a lot of the fragmentation issues that have been hindering app development for the platform that has often involved apps working for some devices and not others. This, plus a revamped Android Market along with the addition of Google TV into the Android ecosystem, will surely boost the quantity and scope of apps to come.

Last week, we had the launch of two more ’4G’ devices on the AT&T network, the HP Veer 4G and the Samsung Infuse 4G, which sparked new complaints about the carrier’s marketing strategy. Back at CES earlier this year, AT&T had already downgraded the term 4G to their “evolved” 3G network, but this past week, they further downgraded 4G to mean the combination of 3G and a fast backhaul. So, what happens when they actually complete their promised 4G LTE network?

The term 4G was originally meant for 100Mbps, a speed that most carriers currently cannot achieve. It later became attached to the LTE and WiMAX networks being built by Verizon and Sprint, respectively. Late to the party, T-Mobile and AT&T, battled it out on the marketing end to jump on the 4G bandwagon by including their “evolved” 3G networks (HSPA+). However, this past week, AT&T redefined the term once again to mean anything with the combination of 3G speed plus a fast backhaul, or fast connection from cell tower back to the network.

According to PCMag, AT&T’s senior vice president of devices, Jeff Bradley, laid out the new definition saying, “Our tests show that [4G experiences] happen with Cat-10 devices, or 14.4 … combined with fast backhaul. That’s the key. It’s got to be a combination of the two.”

Many PSN subscribers were upset with the situation, both frustrated at Sony’s delay in response and at the hackers responsible. However, many couldn’t help but aim their anger at Sony, with reports claiming 1 out of 5 would switch to the Xbox. Nonetheless, will Sony’s response be enough for PSN subscribers and will they be able to regain trust? For both panels of this week’s comic, continue after the cut.

Apple’s patent suit claims Samsung copied the “look and feel” of their user interface, including having a grid of colorful square icons with uniformly rounded corners, a bottom row “Springboard” of square icons, and an overall rectangular product shape that has four uniformly rounded corners. The TouchWiz UI resemblance to Apple’s iOS UI is certainly there, but it will still be one tough legal battle with Samsung fighting back that will bring plenty of analysis on its implications for Apple and the smartphone/tablet industry as a whole. But, let’s just imagine for fun if Samsung were to lose on the UI design battlefront…

The Apple vs. Samsung legal battle is an interesting one despite the myriad of lawsuits already in full swing amongst all the major manufacturers. Apple is Samsung’s number two largest client and fills up 4% of their annual revenue, whereas Samsung is also Apple’s major components supplier in semi-conductors, memory, and displays.

Last week Cisco announced that it was shutting down its Flip video camera business that it bought just two years ago from Pure Digital for $590 million dollars. It was their bid to tackle the consumer market, a segment that is apparently beyond their expertise. There are many reasons behind their decision.

The product had been quite popular at one time with many celebrities toting around Flip cams, but with the onslaught of smartphone cameras—now boasting up to 1080p full HD along with instant sharing capabilities via WiFi and data plans, plus almost every other feature you can imagine—even the promising FlipLive WiFi-enabled camera is a step too late. On flip side, Flip die-hards feel there is still hope for the brand and the product, but that Cisco is simply giving up.

Last week we had an episode that seemed almost like an April Fools prank between Google and CNN. You would think that these two big shots wouldn’t run into such a PR problem. CNN may have been a little too enthusiastic on their reporting claiming Google was busy at work developing a facial recognition app, while Google may have been hyper-sensitive given their run in with the privacy police in the past.

Almost immediately after we posted the story originally sourced from CNN, we received a message from Google stating that the CNN report was purely speculative and soon thereafter received a rebuttal from CNN. It was quite entertaining, we must say, but it does bring up a lot of questions and concerns both on privacy as well as media reporting.

AT&T made a big announcement this past weekend—on a Sunday of all days. The carrier has committed to purchasing T-Mobile for $39 billion, a deal that will take 12 months to complete. The acquisition is said to help more quickly expand AT&T’s LTE network coverage. But merging the two largest GSM carriers in the US, leaves little room for competition.

Consumers, especially those who require GSM over CDMA, may suffer from less competitive pricing plans. Even if T-Mobile is kept as a separate subsidiary, there’s no longer need for it to compete against AT&T. It will be interesting to see how Verizon and Sprint respond to this development in the upcoming months.

After a slew of crazy and offensive antics over the past few weeks including anti-semitic slurs, hookers, drugs, and getting fired off of “Two and a Half Men,” the troubled actor seems to only be gaining in popularity. Spawning several catch phrases including “winning” and even trending #tigerblood, the actor has now landed on the Guinness world record for hitting 1 million followers on Twitter just one day after he signed up for an account last week on March 1st.

But with all updates, there’s always a chance of firmware issues wrecking your phone. So be sure to backup first. Sprint last week announced that they would be rolling out Froyo updates for the Samsung Epic 4G, but had to quickly halt the update as complaints arose over Epic 4G phones getting bricked after the new install.

Twitter suspended UberTwitter and Twidroyd this past Friday for violations including trademark infringement and “changing the content of user’s Tweets in order to make money.” Although the suspension seemed to catch everyone by surprise, Twitter says that they’ve been warning Ubermedia–the company behind the two most popular 3rd-party Twitter apps–since April of last year.

Considering that Twitter has been having a difficult time monetizing its platform and that the move also coincided with an update to Twitter’s own app, makes people wonder about the motivations and timing. Over the weekend, Ubermedia made all the changes requested, including changing the name of its app to UberSocial. And they look to be back up and running. But other 3rd-party apps may want to tread carefully now, too.

Mobile/tablet OS platforms are duking it out for survival as platform updates, new product launches, dubious alliances and speculations continue to brew. Android OS is increasingly dominating the marketplace, with Apple’s iOS attempting to regain momentum and stirring up the media with plenty of rumors. Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer and Nokia’s Stephen Elop just made a surprise announcement last week to put Windows Phone 7 on future Nokia phones–seemingly a take-over of Nokia and an imminent demise for Symbian and MeeGo–a move that blindsided Intel and slighted Google. And still earlier last week HP/Palm introduced new phones and tablets to push their own webOS platform. The competition’s getting rough. Can all the operating systems at least just allow us to truly multitask our apps for now?
