Here’s how Tizen on Samsung’s SUHD Smart TVs works

Samsung may have invented some new branding for its top-tier TVs, but we're more interested in how Tizen has found its way into the sets as Sammy's smart TV OS of choice. The company has been flirting with the open-source platform for the past few years, predominantly focusing on its potential on the wrist as an OS for smartwatches and wearables, but for the 2015 SUHD TV range it's being repurposed as a catch-up platform for live, on-demand, and streaming content that plays particularly nicely with smartphones and tablets. We stopped by to see how it all worked.

Samsung SUHD TV one-ups Ultra HD with uber-colors

What comes after Ultra HD when you're trying to sell people new TVs? If you're Samsung, the answer is SUHD, when the added "S" somewhat nebulous in its abbreviating but kept for the firm's most high-end models. It's not just a name and some sleek beveled edges, however, with Samsung turning to nanocrystal semiconductors to improve picture quality, contrast, brightness, and color, even running at the same 4K resolution as last year's sets. Meanwhile, under the hood of each SUHD is a new Smart TV platform powered by Tizen.

Tim Baxter walked onstage today at Samsung's CES 2015 presentation to suggest they'd be bringing another year of full coverage for smart devices for all areas of your life. Live Smarter, said Baxter, with Samsung TVs, working with Curved UHD TV, 800 Retail Experience Zones, and massive amounts of content. Samsung, he said, has 60% of the UHD market share in the United States. Half of their UDH TV sales are curved TVs, he said, and "this is what market leaders do" - working in the UHD market where market growth was projected at 4x through the year 2015 - according to Samsung, that is.

Samsung’s SSD T1 external drive is tiny, but powerful

One quiet corner of Samsung’s umbrella consumer tech offerings is storage, where they’ve made quite a splash with their SSD options. Today at CES, Samsung is rolling out an upgrade to their SSD storage, going external and big — but also small. Their new SSD T1 is about as small as a credit card (thicker, obviously), but houses a full terabyte of data storage. The SSD is also meant for external use, where Samsung boasts it’s perfect for the mobile consumer.

This week we're having a look at a whole bunch of Lenovo devices at CES 2015, one of the strangest being this Yoga Tablet 2. This device has an 8-inch display, Windows 8.1, and the ability to work with any metal object as a stylus pen. DISH Hopper Voice Remote and 4K Joey box unveiled

This week at CES 2015, Dish is bringing more than a Sling TV service to the market. They're also bringing a new DISH Hopper Voice Remote and a 4K Joey TV box as well. With the Hopper Voice Remote, you'll find a "streamlined customer experience," as they say, finding a sweet spot between the limited functionality (requiring more clicks) of the Apple TV remote and the overly-complicated universal remotes of the past. This remote will be present in most future Dish device setups.

It’s Internet cable, and comes courtesy of Dish. Maybe best of all, it only runs $20/month. For that spend, you get access to a variety of popular cable TV channels, including ESPN.
