ITG xpPhone 2 puts Windows 8 in your pocket

ITG, maker of the xpPhone - putting Windows XP into a smartphone-scale chassis - has returned with the successor, the xpPhone 2, and thanks to Windows 8's new Metro homescreen it looks a whole lot more usable. Fronted by a 4.3-inch display and measuring 140 x 73 x 17.5 mm, the xpPhone 2 is expected to go on sale in 2012, running a full desktop OS rather than something mobile-focused like Windows Phone or Android.

xpPhone video hands on: 3G, 5hrs battery & plenty of bulk

ITG's xpPhone was one of the more curious prospects for Computex - something with the form-factor of a MID but resolutely intended to be used as a cellphone - and jkkmobile stopped by to check it out.  The xpPhone certainly tries to fit in as much as possible: SSD up to 64GB in size, multiple wireless options including Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and WiMAX, and an AMD mobile processor.

ITG xpPhone: WVGA touchscreen, QWERTY & 3G

As descriptive names go, ITG's xpPhone says it all.  The 4.8-inch WVGA touchscreen slider is, as you might expect, a phone, and runs, unsurprisingly, Windows XP; it's all chugging along on an unspecified AMD mobile processor with up to 1GB of RAM, a choice of up to 64GB SSD or 120GB hard-drive, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Another week has passed and brought with it lots of cool new gear and the requisite number of new Apple rumors. Welcome to this week's Week in Review. I suspect that the guys at Google who pick the names of the Android OS versions may have been dieting when they started to name Android updates after tasty treats. We learned that the next Android version may be called frozen yogurt. Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.
