Sony event in India could be for the Xperia Z4

Sony event in India could be for the Xperia Z4

If the stars align, we might actually get to see the Sony Xperia Z4, as it is known in Japan, head outside the Land of the Rising Sun, contrary to earlier assurances that the weird device is a Japan-only affair. Sony sent out invitations in India for an event dated May 26, and although the aquatic theme of the invite suggests the Xperia M4 Aqua, there are whispers that it might actually be intended for the start of the global launch of the Xperia Z4 instead.

Sony to brand Xperia Z4 as Xperia Z3+ in other markets

Sony to brand Xperia Z4 as Xperia Z3+ in other markets

It seems that Sony might have become a bit unhinged in its efforts to hunker down on its somewhat floundering mobile business. First, it rather quietly unveiled the Xperia Z4, which may or may not be limited to the Japanese market. And then there are whispers of an Xperia P2 that looks terribly similar except in a few areas. Now there is word that Sony might actually sell the Xperia Z4 in other markets as well, but quite appropriately name it as the Xperia Z3+ instead.

Xperia P2 leak resembles a slightly different Xperia Z4

Xperia P2 leak resembles a slightly different Xperia Z4

It's been quite a while, three years in fact, since we've last seen a P series smartphone. In fact, there has actually only been one member of that family, until now. At least, if this latest leak is to believed. The rather strange thing about this Xperia P2 is not that it exists, considering how the Xperia P wasn't exactly a hit. It is the fact that its spec sheet make it look like a thicker variant of the just announced Xperia Z4, a smartphone that itself is still shrouded in mystery, that makes it rather curious.

Sony Xperia Z4 unveiled without fuss or fanfare

Sony Xperia Z4 unveiled without fuss or fanfare

Sony is being strange lately, at least when it comes to its mobile devices. We already know that the Xperia Z4 would be coming soon, considering it was a no show at MWC last February even while the Xperia Z4 Tablet debuted with the name. The OEM seems to also flip flop on its position about releasing a flasghip once or twice a year. And now it just revealed the Xperia Z4 and, unlike its rivals in the market, it didn't even hold a special event to do so, which is a weird treatment of a flagship.

T-Mobile drops Xperia Z3 — is Xperia Z4 closer than we think?

As we start to see Xperia Z4 leaks rolling in, we’re left to assume the handset is on its way. Sony hasn’t sent out invitations to an event, though, so it’s left in limbo. Benchmarks and product shots give us an idea of what’s going on with Sony’s newest, but we still don’t have it. We’re also running out of ways to get an Xperia Z3, as T-Mobile has confirmed they’re no longer carrying the handset. That leaves Verizon as the only US carrier that is currently offering the Xperia Z3.

Xperia Z4 images leak, show Z3 rehash

Sony’s Xperia Z4, their lineal flagship champion, is edging toward release, according to a variety of leaks. We’ve seen some specs via benchmarks, which show the latest from Sony may not blow your mind. Once rumored to hit at MWC this year, Sony instead put the Z4 off, allegedly to capture our attention with a solo release instead of battling the MWC/post-CES rush. Much as the specs don’t wow us, these pics continue to suggest the hardware design is, well, uninspired.

Xperia Z4 appears on GFXBench with unsurprising specs

Xperia Z4 appears on GFXBench with unsurprising specs

Given the existence of the Xperia Z4 Tablet, there is very little doubt that an Xperia Z4 will soon be making its way to our hands. Indeed, it's more a question of when rather than if, as Sony's mobile division really can't afford to skip a flagship generation. And while we do expect that smartphone to land soon, we can't be help wonder what it would be like, since, rather surprisingly, the smartphone hasn't been leaked to death yet unlike its predecessors. A GFXBench entry gives a bit of a clue, but, at least based on these specs, the Xperia Z4 might not have any surprises either.

Xperia M4 Aqua smartphone detailed: getting wet

Xperia M4 Aqua smartphone detailed: getting wet

This week the folks at Sony have detailed their new midrange smartphone, the Xperia M4 Aqua. This device is Sony's first octa-core 64-bit smartphone running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with Android 5.0 Lollipop under the hood. This device will be released in 80 countries worldwide with more than 100 carrier partners - except the United States. No Xperia M4 Aqua for us. There are no plans at this time to bring the US, suggests Sony, as their flagship focus in the United States continues. Guess we'll have to live with the ultra-awesome Xperia Z3 or Z3v.
