Video of the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone in action has been caught online, showing the XPERIA Play branded handset running a PS1 emulator and playing Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer. The clip, spotted by Edge Magazine, shows the unannounced smartphone loading an app called ROM Buddy and then playing titles from Sony's original PlayStation console.

While we're left waiting for Sony Ericsson to make the PlayStation Phone official, we'll just have to accept the continuous leaks of the device that keep popping up. This time around, the lucky owner manages to have two on hand to show off. However, we do get to see what version of Android the device, which will be known as either the Zeus Zi or Xperia Play (more than likely) when it launches, is running -- along with a new logo on the bottom-left of the slide-out board.
The rumors surrounding when the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone will land keep going. The latest rumor has the device landing in the spring of 2011. That rumor comes from a Japanese paper called Asahi Shimbun and was printed today. According other paper the device will be based on the PSPgo.
Sony's PSP Go failed to ignite the mobile gaming market in the way that the company hoped it might, but that hasn't stopped Sony engineers and designers from pushing ahead with another PSP successor. According to Sony's gaming chief, Kazuo Hirai, the company has been looking to the next-gen handheld "since the day" the PlayStation was released, and might use both a touchscreen and traditional physical gaming controls. Meanwhile, Hirai believes there's still a segment of gamers for whom the popular - and cheap - iOS, Android and other mobile games aren't sufficient.
The discovery of a number of "xperiaplay" domain registrations by a Swedish PR company that counts Sony Ericsson among its clients has led to suggestions that the upcoming PlayStation Android smartphone will launch as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play. The gaming handset has been spotted in the wild on numerous occasions, complete with PlayStation-style control pad buttons, but so far its branding has been unclear. The hunt for the domains was prompted by PocketNow's discovery of an "XPERIA PLAY" trademark filing.
