Sony axes Xperia PLAY Android 4.0 upgrade

Sony has cancelled plans to upgrade the Xperia PLAY gaming smartphone to Ice Cream Sandwich, justifying its decision with negative feedback from carriers, developers and owners of the test Android 4.0 build. "After extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners," Sony said in a statement today, "we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich." HTC could be the first company outside Sony to offer PlayStation-certified mobile devices, according to the latest leaks, bringing titles previously limited to handsets like the XPERIA Play to future HTC phones and tablets. The deal could be announced as early as Mobile World Congress later this month, insiders tell Pocket-lint, with full certification in the second half of the year. Sony may finally be loosening up its grip on the PlayStation suite platform. The numbers clearly show that Sony Ericsson is seeing sales slip away as the number of units shipped has dropped compared to last year.
