Sony teases upcoming PS3 video service

, Apr 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

Sony has teased that it will launch a new online video service through the PS3, but details very much remain a mystery. There is a lot of speculation, ranging from ideas that it could be a service on par with the Xbox 360's partnerships with Verizon and Comcast, to the notion that it could simply be another video-on-demand platform like Vudu and the PSN's proprietary video store that doesn't necessarily bring a lot of new and exciting content to the platform. Keep the Discs in my Xbox and PlayStation

, Apr 2nd 2012 Discuss [0]

The prognostication on the next generation of consoles has begun. Like Federal elections, it probably began the minute the last generation hit the market. No sooner does the Playstation 3 hit the market than spectators start wondering about the PlayStation 4. Did they expect Sony or Microsoft to roll over and play dead? Well, in the case of Sega, this may have actually happened. But while I enjoy a good product rumor as much as the next tech junkie, I think that it is not only too early to start discussing the next generation of console, it might even be dangerous for us, the players.

Microsoft files antitrust complaint against Motorola

, Feb 22nd 2012 Discuss [0]

Microsoft has joined Apple in filing an antitrust complaint against Motorola Mobility, claiming the company is trying to use online video standards patents as a weapon, and that new owner Google is doing nothing to stop it. According to Microsoft’s Deputy General Counsel, Dave Heiner, Motorola is demanding the company yank Windows PCs, Xbox 360 consoles and more from store shelves in North America and Europe, “or else remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect wirelessly.” That, Heiner argues, is antitrust behavior, and he shows Microsoft’s sums to prove it: Motorola apparently wants 1,125x the rate in royalty payments as other patent holders.

Dell Alienware X51 Hands-on

, Feb 6th 2012 Discuss [1]

Dell’s Alienware X51 desktop promises to be the compact desktop powerhouse to flesh out the company’s mainstream range, just as much at home churning through fps in the latest FPS as it is crunching HD video as your HTPC. We caught up with Dell at the Alienware X51′s London launch event, to see whether this is really the compact desktop of your gaming and multimedia dreams, or just an over-illuminated, excessively styled and expensive alternative to the Xbox 360.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 4 2012

, Jan 28th 2012 Discuss [0]

This week started with a total restructuring of the heads at RIM while they consider licensing BlackBerry 10 and Chris Davies assures us that RIM's new CEO is a Placeholder, not a prophet. Of course other than that there's just a brand new Year of the Dragon in China and a radiation storm hitting the Earth courtesy of the Sun. Auroras and full video documentation from NASA intact. And HP's webOS is now open source including its good pal Enyo - and John Rubinstein is gone! Read The Full Story

Why I’d Take An Xbox 360 Over An Apple TV Any Day

, Jan 28th 2012 Discuss [190]

I’m often asked by friends if they should buy an Apple TV. They usually head to the Apple Store to buy a new iPad or iPhone, and while there, they come across Apple’s little set-top box. For just $99, it seems like a bargain. And so, they ask me if they should plunk down the cash to buy one.

The first question I ask when I field the question is, “do you own an Xbox 360?”

Why Sony Won’t Launch A New PlayStation This Year (Or Next)

, Jan 20th 2012 Discuss [71]

I’m often asked when Sony will launch its next PlayStation. Just about everyone is interested in finding out if the next console the consumer electronics giant offers up can be as appealing and popular as its predecessors. The push for Sony to launch a new PlayStation is also born out of the fact that Nintendo is launching a new console this year, called the Wii U. And if history is to be our guide for the future, most console makers launch their new devices around the same time.
