Skype Project Chess allegedly explored NSA access ahead of Microsoft buy

Skype allegedly developed a clandestine program dubbed Project Chass that investigated potential ways to increase government and law enforcement access to its VoIP calling service, years in advance of Microsoft's acquisition in 2011. Project Chess was formed while Skype had "sometimes contentious talks with the government over legal issues," insiders tell the NYTimes, with knowledge of the program limited to under a dozen within the firm.

Skype Video Messaging graduates from beta with unlimited clip support

Skype has taken Skype Video Messaging out of beta, pushing the three minute clip-sharing service to most of its desktop and mobile apps. Previewed back in February - though limited at the time to just 20 messages per user - the full launch of the Video Messaging service includes unlimited use and doesn't require one of Skype's premium packages, taking on MMS video in the process.

Today, Skype has announced that its popular video calling service is available as a preview for BlackBerry Z10 users. The app first rolled out onto BlackBerry Q10 devices last month as a preview, and now the Z10 is getting it's moment of video-chat glory. CopyTele sues Skype in its “patent monetization” scheme

CopyTele, or more specifically, its Secure Web Conference Corp. division has sued Microsoft's Skype due to patent infringement. Copytele says that Skype infringed on 2 of its patents, one regarding a "method and apparatus for securing e-mail attachments", and the other for a "portable telecommunication security device." However, CopyTele didn't sue Skype because it was trying to protect its patent portfolio. It sued Skype because it saw an opportunity to generate more money off its patents. Yes, unfortunately, CopyTele is known as a patent troll.
