IDC smartphone shipment data testify to Xiaomi’s rise

Some would have us believe that the smartphone craze is starting to settle down and that the industry has reached its plateau. That might be true for some markets, especially developed ones, and some vendors. The smartphone shipment figures for the third quarter of 2014 from IDC, however, reveal that there is still lots of room to grow, especially when the market just shipped 327.6 million smartphones, a growth of 25.2 percent from the same third quarter last year and 8.7 percent from the 301.3 million smartphones shipped just last quarter.

Android extended its grip on worldwide smartphone market share in Q2 2014, the latest numbers from IDC suggest, while iOS and Windows Phone both declined, despite iPhone sales jumping year-over-year. Alongside these numbers, IDC shows an smartphone average selling price (ASP) chart which shows a relatively clear trend: downward. IDC has released its third-quarter numbers on the tablet industry, and in them we see good news for four of the top five tablet vendors, with all but Apple seeing growth -- in a couple cases, substantial growth -- year-on-year. IDC: Smart connected devices surpassed 1 billion device shipments in 2012

According the the IDC, smart connected devices surpassed 1 billion shipments in 2012, with around 1.2 billion devices being shipped worldwide. Smart connected devices shipments grew 29.1% year-over-year in 2012. Tablet shipments played a huge role in the shipments increase. There was a 78.4% year-over-year growth in tablet shipments last year, with over 128 million tablets being shipped out globally. The surge in tablet shipments is most likely due to the large amount of budget-friendly tablets available, like Amazon's Kindle Fire.
