Siri hacked by four college freshmen, tons of functionality added

Siri loves to give answers — often snarky — but she doesn’t do much outside of create reminders. The voice assistant for iOS is handy, but lacks a lot of curcial control that some have been wanting. Four fast-talking, enterprising freshman at the University of Pennsylvania successfully hacked Siri, creating an exploit that intercepts your queries and redirects them to apps called GoogolPlex.

Toyota FT-1: Inside the Gran Turismo 6 car made real

As concept cars go, Toyota building a real-world FT-1 racer to celebrate the car's inclusion in Gran Turismo 6 really goes the extra mile, so we couldn't pass up the chance to get inside with designer William Chergosky of the company's CALTY Design Research team. CALTY cooked up the FT-1 concept after Toyota global president Akio Toyoda fell in love with the in-game version when he first played it, resulting in a car that teases the hotly-anticipated next-gen Supra.

I can finally recommend Windows Phone

I can finally recommend Windows Phone

It’s taken a while - two major generations and a couple of updates - but Windows Phone finally feels ready to take on Android and iOS with confidence. I’ve always had a soft-spot for the platform, and appreciated its minimalistic UI charms and quiet simplicity, even as I’ve been frustrated by its incomplete feature list and patchy third-party app support. Now, with Windows Phone 8.1, I feel like that quiet enthusiasm can spill over into actively recommending it Microsoft’s OS as a legitimate option.

Smartphone makers bend for carriers: who benefits?

Smartphone makers bend for carriers: who benefits?

It’s not difficult to see the reasons why the smartphone manufacturers of the world still play second fiddle to the mobile carriers they work with. He who controls the spice, controls the universe, after all. Both Windows Phone 8.1 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 prove the notion that though the manufacturers create the phones and developers create the software, it’s the carriers that continue to hold the most power.

Windows Phone 8.1 Review (Developer Preview)

Windows Phone 8.1 is no point update. In fact, if it wasn’t so keen on keeping in naming step with Windows on the desktop, Microsoft could probably have called its new smartphone OS version something more impressive: what started out as an aim to bring the virtual assistant Cortana and the useful Action Center to the platform blossomed in the process to include a whole flurry of tweaks and additions. You can also be running a smartphone that is "developer unlocked" to get the update. Microsoft said that this preview period is aimed at allowing developers to be sure that their apps will run correctly on a phone before the update launches to the general public.

Five Fire TV updates to make it the streamer to beat

Amazon's Fire TV launched last week to grand fanfare and plenty of promise, but as we discovered in our review the streaming box isn't quite perfect yet. Taking on Apple TV, Chromecast, and Roku with faster performance, easier search, and more compelling gaming makes a lot of sense, but some aspects of the Fire TV experience still need work. Head on past the cut to find the five tweaks that could make Fire TV the set-top box to beat.

Windows in the Car to put Cortana in the dashboard

Windows in the Car to put Cortana in the dashboard

Apple has CarPlay, Google has the Android Open Automotive Alliance, and now Microsoft has Windows in the Car, its own take on piping smartphone content from your Windows Phone directly to the dashboard. Quietly demonstrated at Build 2014 this past week, in concept form at least, Windows in the Car pares back the standard Windows Phone interface to suit center console touchscreens and safer use while on the move thanks to features like Cortana.
