Windows 10 update for phones starting now

Windows 10 update for phones starting now

This morning Microsoft's Gabriel Aul made it official: the Technical Preview for Windows 10 for smartphones will be beginning today. Today is the day, at last, and finally - the button has been pressed, and the update is, indeed, happening. While we're not 100% certain of which devices will receive said update first, we have gotten some clues - if you purchased a phone in the past year from the higher end of Windows Phone, you may be in luck. Unless you have a Lumia 1520 or 1020, sadly.

Windows Phone TileArt: customization at last

Windows Phone TileArt: customization at last

This week the folks at Microsoft behind their own collection of Windows Phone apps have released a piece of software called "#TileArt". This app allows Windows Phone 8.1 users to customize their lock screen, create their own custom tile layout for their home screen, and share home screens with friends through various social networks. Similar features have been available for a while in limited form - now creativity is a bit more unleashed. Now if only we were able to do the same thing with Xbox One, that'd be fabulous.

Cortana for Windows 10 demoed on desktop taskbar

Microsoft is bringing Cortana to a new place for Windows 10, making certain the public understands that with more than just this one system, your computing service is going to be cross-platform. To do this, Cortana has been shown on the desktop's task bar. This is more like a search bar than anything, replicating what we've seen in the past on Windows Phone 8, here now on the bottom of our screen for desktop machines with Windows 10 - all in cool blue, of course.

Twitter for Windows Phone lets Cortana in on tweeting

Twitter for Windows Phone lets Cortana in on tweeting

The official Twitter for Windows Phone app has been updated, adding Cortana integration for tweeting by voice, and improving how links browsed on your phone can be shared socially. The latest version, for Windows Phone 8.1 devices only, now allows users to tell Cortana - Microsoft's virtual personal assistant, aka Siri for Windows Phone - to fire out a 140 character message without having to tap it in themselves. It's a welcome improvement, though it remains to be seen whether Windows Phone fans, jaded by the ongoing token saga crippling third-party Twitter clients, will warm to the software.

Never one to be content, the Internet has fished around and procured its own details, usually in the form of rumors and speculation, and that trend holds true now that we're into the new year. A couple of screenshots have surfaced of what are said to be Windows 10's dark theme, as well as its rumored and codenamed Spartan browser.

Guardoor triangular smart sensor monitors doors, windows

Guardoor is a new smart sensor bid as a home security product for those who prefer to keep home safety within the monitoring confines of their smartphone. As with similar products, Guardoor can be attached to a door or a window; the embedded sensors will then monitor for motion and send an alert to whatever device is set up with it, giving the home owner a way to keep tabs on their home (or office, etc.) while out and about.

Forget IE: Microsoft Spartan browser tipped for Windows 10

Forget IE: Microsoft Spartan browser tipped for Windows 10

Internet Explorer is hardly the most loved of browsers, and Microsoft is reportedly planning a drastic fix with a new browser codenamed Spartan tipped to launch alongside Windows 10. Intended to be more lightweight and flexible - borrowing a look and feel more akin to Google's Chrome or Mozilla's Firefox - than previous Microsoft web browsers, Spartan would stick with Microsoft's existing engine technologies under the hood, but wrap them up in such a way that the company's engineers hope users forget whatever bad experiences they may have had with legacy software such as IE6.

LG launches Tab Book Duo Windows 8 tablet convertible

A bit unexpected, LG just revealed the latest member of its Tab Book family. Not exactly well known even among the ranks of Windows 8 tablets, the Tab Books have been around since 2013, switching from Windows to Android and now back to Windows again. This time, LG is going for thin and light, advertising the Tab Book Duo to be the ultimate portable workstation that won't burden your shoulders, arms, or hands. At least not too much.
