Guardoor triangular smart sensor monitors doors, windows

Guardoor is a new smart sensor bid as a home security product for those who prefer to keep home safety within the monitoring confines of their smartphone. As with similar products, Guardoor can be attached to a door or a window; the embedded sensors will then monitor for motion and send an alert to whatever device is set up with it, giving the home owner a way to keep tabs on their home (or office, etc.) while out and about.

LG has forgone Windows in favor of Android lately, so seeing a device from them pop up for Windows is interesting.

Forget IE: Microsoft Spartan browser tipped for Windows 10

Forget IE: Microsoft Spartan browser tipped for Windows 10

Internet Explorer is hardly the most loved of browsers, and Microsoft is reportedly planning a drastic fix with a new browser codenamed Spartan tipped to launch alongside Windows 10. Intended to be more lightweight and flexible - borrowing a look and feel more akin to Google's Chrome or Mozilla's Firefox - than previous Microsoft web browsers, Spartan would stick with Microsoft's existing engine technologies under the hood, but wrap them up in such a way that the company's engineers hope users forget whatever bad experiences they may have had with legacy software such as IE6.

It is still a good month or so before Microsoft unveils the Consumer Preview of Windows 10, formerly known as Threshold, and it will still be a few months before consumers can actually get their hands on it. Windows 10 also has Cortana and this is how she’ll behave

For those keeping an eye on Microsoft next big Windows release, most might be more focused on the fusion of desktop and Modern UI, but there are definitely a lot of other nifty features that should be making their way to Windows 10. Windows Phone Fatboy Lamp team-up shows smart notifications

Back when Microsoft started bringing the heat with their Nokia tag-team for Windows Phone devices, we saw the light with Nokia's team-up with a brand called Fatboy. Nokia provided the smartphones, Fatboy provided the accessories that charged them up. Now Microsoft continues this collaboration, creating such oddities as this - Lumia phones showing you notifications to your phone through the Fatboy Edison Petit lamp. Light up every time you get a message while wirelessly charging your Lumia smartphone - because after all, why not?

Windows Schannel bug as bad as Heartbleed, patch available

Windows Schannel bug as bad as Heartbleed, patch available

The tech world as a whole is still reeling from the OpenSSL vulnerability that was so bad that it was baptized with its own name. Now Microsoft might have an equally terrible, or perhaps even worse, issue in its hands. A bug in its Schannel (short for "Secure channel") security package could, in theory, allow any hacker to remotely run a program just by sending a specially crafted network packet to a Windows server. To add insult to injury, this security exploit exists in a wide range of Windows version dating back 2003.

The connected home doesn’t have to be limited to Android and iOS any more. Though aesthetically different, the Windows Phone variant of the SmartThings app mimics the functionality of its Android and iOS counterparts. The app is free to download and use, but you’ll still need some hardware. If you’re in the market for connected home products, though, SmartThings is a good option.

NYPD to equip every officer with Windows smartphone

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio revealed on Friday that all 35,000 of the city's police officers were going to be issued smartphones as part of a $160 million technology initiative.
