Windows 10 Mobile build 10136: one-handed use, polished Cortana

With Windows 10 for desktops and tablets nearing completion, Microsoft seems to be showering some well-deserved attention to Windows 10 Mobile, which still doesn't have a release date. The latest build, number 10136, brings in some interesting new features and, thankfully, implements some long-standing wishes from Windows Phone insiders. But as interesting and as good at this update might be, it also brings in some headaches for the brave souls who volunteer to take these early versions for a spin for the rest of us.

Windows 10 preview build 10130: Cortana shortcut and more

Windows 10 preview build 10130: Cortana shortcut and more

Microsoft has pushed out the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build, bringing it to build 10130. Because the builds are fairly far along at this point, they no longer bring with them big changes that add big features — rather, at this point, it’s more polishing things up and tweaking things when needed. As such, you’ll find a lot of smaller changes with build 10130, perhaps some that you were hoping would happen, including things as simple as a new shortcut for Cortana to customization of the Start experience.

If you were hoping that meant that the operating system would be landing on smartphones this summer as well, we have some bad news. Windows 10 phones will (sort of) run Android & iOS apps

Remember the Nokia X? It was one of the last Nokia handsets, but its platform was a subversive attempt by Microsoft to get Android apps onto their platform. Without much work, Android Developers could make their apps available on the Microsoft store for the Nokia X, which was meant to bridge a gap between platforms. that concept died, but Microsoft didn’t give up on making it easier for Developers to ‘write once, deploy everywhere’. Now, code written for Android and iOS apps can be compiled in Visual Studio.

Windows 10: latest preview build brings Spartan browser

Windows 10: latest preview build brings Spartan browser

Microsoft has pushed out the latest Windows 10 Preview Build (10049), and with it comes the long-coveted Project Spartan browser. That's just about the only notable addition to the latest build, which follows the release of Build 10041 we recently discussed. Some of the issues brought on by the last build are fixed in this latest one, as well, such as getting stuck when locking the PC. Project Spartan is the big focus this time around, however, something Microsoft likewise detailed today to get users up-to-date on what all it has to offer.

Next Windows 10 for Phones build could support 30 models

Next Windows 10 for Phones build could support 30 models

While the Windows 10 upgrade path on the desktop is more or less clear cut, the same can't be said of their mobile counterparts. Last February, Microsoft started handing out preview builds of the upcoming operating system but its coverage was worryingly limited, to at most 6 models. That's not to say that Microsoft will only be supporting those and upcoming smartphones, but it hung a cloud of uncertainty over users. Now Microsoft is clearing the air by revealing as much as 36 models (30 if you count variants as one) who might be in the next round of builds.
