Windows RT Office 2013 suite tipped by early Outlook install

Windows RT Office 2013 suite tipped by early Outlook install

While Microsoft continues to push two different sects with their Windows 8 / Windows RT split, users deciding on the latter have made a case for needing one app particularly: Outlook. The 2013 version of Outlook has been confirmed earlier this week to be coming to Windows RT soon, but until then, the waiting will include early previews and sneak-shots galore. While surprises may be in store for users once the app is made real for the public, at the moment it seems that there's a severe lack of excitement going on for those users pre-testing the software - save a full Office suite, that is.

Outlook for Windows RT incoming with 8.1; new Surface update detailed

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows RT tablets will get a full copy of Outlook 2013 RT as of the Windows 8.1 update, helping open a few more enterprise doors for slates like Surface. The app, not currently available for "Windows-on-ARM", has been a frequently requested one, Microsoft conceded, and the company hopes will help shift Windows RT out of the grey area between business and personal use.

Microsoft slashing Windows RT licensing to rescue interest tip sources

Microsoft slashing Windows RT licensing to rescue interest tip sources

Microsoft is believed to be discounting Windows RT tablet OS licenses in an attempt to stimulate interest in the Windows-on-ARM platform. Windows RT had been Microsoft's strategy to directly take on the iPad and Android tablets with more affordable chipsets from Qualcomm and others, but lackluster app compatibility left OEMs hesitant. Now, Bloomberg's sources claim, Microsoft is relying on good old fashioned discounting to drive interest.

Acer dismisses Windows RT as not “influential”

Acer has joined the Windows RT naysayers, with the company's chairman, J.T. Wang, criticizing the Windows-on-ARM platform for lacking influence in the market. The Taiwanese company hasn't been slow to jump on board the Windows 8 bandwagon - being the first company to launch an 8-inch Windows 8 tablet, in fact, earlier today at Computex - but Wang told the WSJ that his confidence didn't extend to the sibling OS.

HTC reportedly scraps 12″ Windows RT tablet plans (but 7″ still on the way)

HTC has reportedly axed plans to launch a 12-inch tablet running Windows RT, sources claim, after deciding demand for the slate would be insufficient, though a smaller version is still said to be on the roadmap. The unnamed 12-inch tablet was sidelined over fears that it would be too expensive, Bloomberg reports, with the components required adding up to too great a bill-of-materials to allow a competitive street price.

Acer says no value in a Windows RT tablet

As the computer market continues to struggle, some continue to point to Microsoft and its lackluster Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems as a major reason for the struggles. While there are several tablet makers who have launched devices running Windows RT, the tablets have proven to be relatively unpopular. Acer is one of Microsoft's software partners and the company has a number of tablets and notebooks running software from Microsoft.

Dell Exec: Windows RT response is “still pretty negative”

Dell Exec: Windows RT response is “still pretty negative”

It's not the system Microsoft thought it'd be - Windows RT, the alternate to Windows 8 for lower-powered systems. It's like the tablet version of Windows 8, but with many of the same bits and pieces of the full deal. This week Dell's head of tablet and high-end PC business Neil Hand spoke with CNET, saying that based on what they've seen thus far, the Windows RT wave of machines hasn't exactly been the success story they'd hoped it'd be.

Windows RT Samsung tablets axed amid low demand in EU

Windows RT Samsung tablets axed amid low demand in EU

It would appear that the Windows RT environment has not quite caught on as fast as Samsung would have liked it to, as more than one report out of Germany this week is saying they've decided to leave the market entirely - or at least in Deutschland. At the moment this will just mean - if substantiated - that the Samsung ATIV Tab RT won't be available through local retailers in Germany. Everywhere else in the world - everywhere else that this device has previously been available, that is - will continue to sell the device as planned.
