It would seem that one of the biggest names behind the touchscreens you use every day, Synaptics, have made the push for a next-generation solution for Windows 8.1 with Active Pen abilities. What this means for future Windows 8.1 device makers is that they'll be able to say they've got pen support right out of the box and/or include a pen with the device they're creating. In what may prove to be a situation similar to what we've seen with the rather successful Samsung Galaxy Note series, the folks at Synaptics are making pen usage on devices - both mobile and stationary - a feature baked in at a hardware level.

Back in June, Microsoft announced a bug bounty program, offering a variety of awards for those who found bugs and exploitations for its software. While the Internet Explorer 11 portion of the bounty has come to a close, Microsoft is continuing the "Mitigation Bypass" bounty and has shelled out an award to one industrious individual who found an exploit in Windows 8.1 Preview.

Dell has taken the wraps off two new tablets in its resurrected Venue range, the Venue 8 Pro and Venue 11 Pro running Windows 8.1. The Venue 8 Pro puts Windows 8.1 on an 8-inch HD IPS touchscreen with an optional digitizer pen and the chance to add integrated LTE, with Intel Atom Baytrail under the hood. As for the Venue 11 Pro, that steps up to a Full HD 11-inch display and a detachable keyboard for easier text entry, with the same Active Stylus option.

Windows 8.1 makes cloud storage viable SkyDrive “smart files” search from desktop

If you've been rather hesitant to use the likes of cloud storage - that is, using something like SkyDrive to hold your files online - the folks at Microsoft may have a solution that'll turn your head. While working with cloud storage often means you'll have to either have a copy of each of your files on your local computer OR that you'll be unable to work with a single search source, SkyDrive "smart files" attempts to solve all that nonsense. Here you'll be able to have a single search bar on your desktop that'll allow you to search and see both local files and all of your files in the cloud all at once.
