Willcom D4: UMPC shows promise despite dire battery

, Aug 13th 2008 Discuss [0]

We've been following Jenn Lee's previews of the Willcom D4 UMPC with no small degree of interest, and she's now delivered her full review of "the smallest-screened Centrino Atom device running Windows Vista in the world".  As predicted, the D4 comes in for serious criticism over its battery life - just 1.5hrs from the standard pack - and more worryingly Jenn is reporting that in the relatively short time she's had the UMPC that time has deteriorated even more. SlashGear Week in Review – August 3rd

, Aug 3rd 2008 Discuss [0]

Week in Review time, and it seems like there’s plenty to look back on over the past seven days.  Continuing our fresh tradition, in the fast-moving netbook segment we’ve seen confirmation of ASUS’ Eee PC plans – 23 models in all, the next of which being the 701SD, together with dual-core and bigger SSD versions – as well as Sylvania’s new G Netbook MESO, the target $299 tag of which got plenty of people hot under the collar.  Price is a sore subject over at MSI, who saw their Wind netbook rise in cost uncontrollably, while E-Lead are likely celebrating their Noahpad – with its distinctive dual-touchpad keyboard – finally reaching customers.

There’s plenty to look forward to, as well, with Intel confirming a refresh of their Classmate PC, a video showing Fujitsu’s upcoming Amilo Mini playing with interchangeable casings, and Lenovo tipped for a new netbook to be released in September.  If you can afford a bit more, and can’t wait until September, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X200 is a proper, grown-up ultraportable set to launch imminently; going by the first hands-on reports it looks to be a winner, with battery life getting particular credit.

Willcom D4: battery life terrible but Vista performs well

, Jul 30th 2008 Discuss [1]

Having been unboxed on video, the Willcom D4 UMPC has now travelled over to Jenn at Pocketables for some darned good testing.  While the system is still something of a miniturization marvel, the first reports aren't exactly glowing.  Top of the list (or should that be bottom?) is battery life; Willcom themselves only promise 1.5hrs and that measly figure looks sadly accurate.  Worse still, Jenn found that leaving the D4 in Vista's sleep mode for 7hrs drained it to just 19-percent: around 15 minutes of actual use. Willcom D4 by Sharp UMPC unboxed on video

, Jul 21st 2008 Discuss [1]

The Willcom D4 by Sharp has made quite a few fans over the past few months since its announcement, and Wow-Pow look to be stoking that interest with their recent unboxing video of the compact touchscreen UMPC.  To recap, the D4 is a smartphone/UMPC crossover with a 5-inch touchscreen, 1.33GHz Atom Z520 CPU and, in its native Japan at least, a 1-Seg TV tuner. Check out the D4 unboxing video after the cut Read The Full Story

Willcom D4 hands-on: great design & connectivity but Vista a chore

, May 19th 2008 Discuss [0]

Willcom's D4 has been hailed by many as the UMPC that could finally bridge the gap between the ultramobile PC platform and the smartphone (at least if the price is right).  The lucky guys at Akihabara happen to be right next to Willcom's office in Tokyo, and managed to borrow a D4 alpha-prototype to see just how well Vista runs on a super-compact 1.33GHz Centrino Atom Z520 CPU device with a mere 5-inch 1024x600 TFT touchscreen.  Read The Full Story

Willcom D4 UMPC import on sale in US

, Apr 24th 2008 Discuss [3]

Willcom's D4 UMPC might be rocking the smartphone look but its guts are pure PC.  Running Vista on a 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor with 1GB of RAM, a 40GB hard-drive and 5-inch touchscreen, plenty of people were interested in the QWERTY-blessed device but Willcom are showing little interest in releasing it outside of Japan.  In situations like these, if you've the money, imports are your only option, and GeekStuff4U have just thrown up a pre-order page for the D4 which suggests they could be in the US by June 20th. Willcom D4 WSO16H from Sharp and Willcom – the little UMPC that could!

Sure, this little UMPC can fit in the palm of your hand and is only marginally larger than a lot of the larger smartphones being released these days, but this is no smartphone, this is a full on computer. It has an Intel Atom processor inside, a 40GB HDD, a 5” touchscreen, and so much more. Read The Full Story
