Google Maps update: “Faster route now available”

This week Google fully recognizes the power of Waze in their maps apps. With Google Maps' update here and now, the 2013 acquisition of Waze has not only been integrated in a real physical way with "Faster route now available" appearances both on Android and in iOS, but Google literally makes the mark in their Google+ release. Here they say "Outsmart traffic and save time on the road", effectively usurping the classic "Outsmart Traffic" tagline for their own.

Cover for Android adds contextual lockscreen with location magic

Cover for Android adds contextual lockscreen with location magic

Another day, another Android launcher alternative, but Cover claims to be doing more than making Google's OS pretty like other skins promise. The new lockscreen uses location context to flag up the apps it believes users will be most likely to want - email while you're at work, perhaps, but games and music while you're at home - while learning from which are actually used to improve the algorithm over time. Meanwhile, Cover can even tell the difference between walking and driving, and it doesn't need an M7 coprocessor to do it.

We sat down with Jane MacFarlane, head of HERE Research at Nokia, and along with her team responsible for making sense of the masses of data, to find out why being a probe might one day help you avoid traffic jams, travel more safely, and even discover the hottest new restaurants, all thanks to the "wisdom of crowds".

Nokia HERE Maps calls out Google on Venue Maps

Nokia HERE Maps calls out Google on Venue Maps

Nokia is calling out Google Maps over indoor mapping, claiming that its HERE Venue Maps cover more areas and with more accuracy than any rival can muster. The software - which is available on Nokia Windows Phones and in Bing - integrates floor plans for inside stadiums, theme parks, golf clubs, and shopping malls with regular mapping data, so that the directions needn't stop when you get inside. However, it also physically visits the venues, something Nokia says differentiates it from Google Maps.
