Viliv S5 MID reviewed: swift, sleek and definitely tempting

We're unashamed of our Viliv S5 lusts here at SlashGear, and Pocketables' review of the 4.8-inch MID has done little to change our feelings.  Though we've already seen the S5 unboxed, demonstrated, dissected, hacked, repurposed as a PND and more, a full going-over is always welcome.  What the Viliv MID delivers are accurate battery estimates, decent 720p playback, reasonable performance and speedy internet surfing.

Viliv S5 MID gets HSDPA hack

Viliv S5 MID gets HSDPA hack

Some HSDPA mods are straightforward: open the casing up of whatever gadget you've decided will get internal 3G, slot in a Mini-PCI card or maybe even squeeze in a USB modem, install the software and off you go.  Other times - like with the Viliv S5 MID - it's a whole lot more complicated.  Over at UMPC Fever, modder SKY is performing delicate electronic surgery inside his S5, soldering in a PCI-E slot in his attempts to get a WWAN-enabled MID.

Viliv S5 MID gets Windows 7

Viliv S5 MID gets Windows 7

The Viliv S5 MID has already done enough to pique our curiosity and fidget for an official US and Europe release, but seeing Windows 7 running on the 4.8-inch touchscreen handheld has tempted us even more.  What you see here is a pre-release Viliv S5 Premium with the Traditional Chinese version of Windows 7, and the good news for would-be upgraders is that all of the drivers installed with nary a hiccup.

Viliv S5 MID gets video unboxing, walkthrough

After yesterday's Viliv S5 MID unboxing gallery, now comes the unboxing video together with a hands-on video.  The S5 is shaping up to be a very interesting device, with the portability and media functionality of a touchscreen PMP, but the flexibility of a MID.  Unlike some rivals, there's no shortage of ports, either; the S5 manages to fit in both a USB host and USB client port.

Viliv S5 gets unboxed, compared to VAIO P & Compal MID

Since we're still waiting to hear when the Viliv S5 MID will land in Europe or the US, our unboxing joy will have to be achieved vicariously through photoshoots like UMPC Fever's.  They've managed to score one of the 4.8-inch touchscreen handhelds, and have photos not only of the unboxing but of the GUI, accessories and even a few group shots with the Sony VAIO P and what looks to be Compal's MID.

Viliv S5 MID sells out in 15 mins; first reviews glowing

Viliv S5 MID sells out in 15 mins; first reviews glowing

We'll have to wait until the end of March before we can get our hands on the Viliv S5 MID, but the touchscreen device went up for limited sale in Korea today and competition for a unit was high.  Viliv offered just 1,000 of the MIDs, with a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 WVGA display, which apparently sold out in 15 minutes.  Lazion have a (Korean language) review up of the S5, and first impressions seem pretty good: 4hrs 35 minutes runtime playing a looping 1.6Mbps DivX video, together with an 18,280 score in CrystalMark 2004R3.

Viliv S5 gets iTunes Cover Flow video demo

In case you had any doubt what MIDs are squaring up against, here's the first video demo of the production S5 in action that Viliv chose to send out.  One of their testers has installed iTunes onto his modified Windows XP system and is calling the user experience similar to that of an iPod touch; obviously, though, this is the full iTunes software as you'd find on your desktop.
