UMID mbook M1 USB 2.0 mod

, Feb 4th 2010 Discuss [0]

One of the frustrations of UMID's first-gen mbook M1 was the absence of a standard USB port; instead you had to remember to carry an awkward adapter dongle.  The company addressed that with the mbook M2, but one owner of the original machine has taken matters into his own hands and added a USB port himself. UMID mbook BZ reviewed: better design but CPU shortcomings

, Jan 25th 2010 Discuss [0]

UMID's mbook BZ (aka the mbook M2) promised to address the complaints MID-lovers had about the first-gen mbook M1, and that's exactly the challenge Jenn over at Pocketables has set it in her hands-on review.  The touchscreen clamshell now gets an optical mouse, standardized ports and a hinge that opens wider than before; problem is, the specifications haven't been boosted as well. Viliv N5 clamshell MID coming to CES 2010

, Dec 23rd 2009 Discuss [0]

UMPC and MID manufacturers Viliv have had a pretty good year in their segment, and they're obviously hoping to start off 2010 in the same manner.  According to UMPC Portal, the company is planning on launching two devices at CES in January, with the Viliv N5 making its debut and the Viliv S10 getting its full launch.  The S10 is a pretty straightforward 10-inch netbook, but the N5 is a 4.8-inch MID in the manner of the Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 or the UMID mbook M2. Onkyo BX 407A4 is rebadged, expensive UMID mbook M2

, Dec 11th 2009 Discuss [1]

Alongside Onkyo's rebadge of the Kohjinsha dual-display netbook yesterday, the company also announced a smaller system that should be familiar to MID-trackers.  The Onkyo BX 407A4 is more recognizable as the UMID mbook M2, launched back in September, but while UMID couldn't quite tell us when the M2 would be on sale, Onkyo are already taking orders for the BX-Series. Sharp NetWalker PC-Z1 lands for unboxing, MID comparison

, Sep 29th 2009 Discuss [0]

Sharp's NetWalker PC-Z1 may not be the device for everyone - after all, a 5-inch touchscreen clamshell MID with a tiny QWERTY keyboard and 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor makes it a pretty niche handheld - but most people can appreciate a mini-laptop so we're pleased to see the first unboxing over at Pocketables.  Jenn of course is no stranger to MIDs, in fact she has a UMID mbook M1 on hand to compare the PC-Z1 with. New UMID mbook model promised for IDF; in US by end of 2009

, Sep 21st 2009 Discuss [0]

It comes as no surprise that UMID are delivering the first look at their second-generation mbook MID at next week's IDF - after all, they revealed those plans back in August - but the big news is that they're promising a US launch for the new device by the end of the year.  That could mean the UMID M2 discussed back in February. UMID M1 import hits $750 for non-3G XP MID

, Apr 9th 2009 Discuss [0]

We've a definite soft-spot for the UMID M1 here at SlashGear, but with the company themselves dragging their feet on official US and European sales, and import prices riding ever higher, it's hard to see the clamshell MID ever finding its niche.  Australian-based importer Justek have tweaked the pricing on the non-HSDPA version of the M1, but for US customers it's still in excess of $660.
