UMID M1 US release delayed; no US 3G support as yet

UMID M1 US release delayed; no US 3G support as yet

Bad news for anyone considering picking up a UMID M1 mobile internet device in the US, as the company confirms that the previous Summer release has now been replaced with "[UMID] can't give exact information on the releasing date in US."  It's also been confirmed that the currently shipping M1 units - the MID has been launched in Korea already - are incompatible with US-spec 3G, not supporting the 850MHz or 1900MHz bands.

UMID M1 retail bundle: massive PSU, fiddly port adapters

If you've watched our two hands-on videos from MWC09 (here and here)you've probably seen all you can stomach of the UMID M1, but the company still has a few surprises in the shape of their retail bundle.  While the first batch of Korean M1 pre-orders - sold there as the mbook - have been recalled due to dodgy build-quality, that hasn't stopped the reviewers from detailing exactly what you get in with the mobile internet device.

UMID M1 MID typing demo video & gallery

UMID M1 MID typing demo video & gallery

After my brief hands-on with the UMID M1 mobile internet device at the start of the week, and coming away not entirely convinced by its keyboard or OS, we stopped back to see the MID again and test out just how suitable the keyboard is for thumb-typing.  The good news is, a combination of two-handed use and the standard Windows XP scheme make this ultraportable a whole lot more tempting a prospect: check out the second hands-on video after the cut.

UMID M1 gets 3G-free $924 pre-order price

UMID M1 gets 3G-free $924 pre-order price

We didn't get a chance to catch up with UMID at CES this year, but their connectivity-heavy M1 MID made an appearance and was promised for a June release in the US.  Price, though, hadn't been decided, but was expected to be "not too expensive"; either the people at UMID aren't familiar with what constitutes expensive, or Australian buyers are being swindled.  The UMID M1 mobile internet device has gone up for pre-order at Justek, an Australia-based reseller, for a whopping AU$1399 ($924), with stock expected by February 27th.

Kohjinsha PA MID priced out of the market?

Kohjinsha PA MID priced out of the market?

Kohjinsha's PA-series MID may have satisfied us that the company is at least listening to critique about form-factor and usability - unlike other mini-notebooks, such as the UMID mbook m1 and Sharp’s NetWalker, it has a rotating touchscreen for use as a slate - but they still seem to have their fingers in their ears when it comes to pricing.  According to WOW-POW, the PA MID will come in at 69,800 yen, which works out to a whopping $760.

One Device to Rule Them All – I Think Not

One Device to Rule Them All – I Think Not

There's a lot of discussion about the role of convergence of devices. Everywhere you go, it seems that someone's pushing the notion that every function needs to be converged into one device. Now convergence is a great idea: the idea of carrying one device instead of multiple devices is compelling, but is it really realistic? Sure, I'd rather carry one device than two, but our research shows consumers will carry two or, in some age demographics, they'll even carry as many as three.

Sharp NetWalker PC-Z1 lands for unboxing, MID comparison

Sharp NetWalker PC-Z1 lands for unboxing, MID comparison

Sharp's NetWalker PC-Z1 may not be the device for everyone - after all, a 5-inch touchscreen clamshell MID with a tiny QWERTY keyboard and 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor makes it a pretty niche handheld - but most people can appreciate a mini-laptop so we're pleased to see the first unboxing over at Pocketables.  Jenn of course is no stranger to MIDs, in fact she has a UMID mbook M1 on hand to compare the PC-Z1 with.
