, Sep 30th 2011 Discuss [0]

Curious as to what's happening at the top of Mount Everest? Tune in to the world's highest webcam and you could find out for yourself, without having to strap on heavy-duty boots and goggles. UMID is no more according to Dynamism

, Dec 10th 2010 Discuss [0]

The last time we wrote about UMID was back in June and at the time; the company had a new product that that sounded decent enough called the mbook SE. The SE was an interesting little machine and the way that most folks here in the States got a UMID product was through importer Dynamism. Read The Full Story

UMID mbook M1 USB 2.0 mod

, Feb 4th 2010 Discuss [0]

One of the frustrations of UMID's first-gen mbook M1 was the absence of a standard USB port; instead you had to remember to carry an awkward adapter dongle.  The company addressed that with the mbook M2, but one owner of the original machine has taken matters into his own hands and added a USB port himself. UMID mbook BZ reviewed: better design but CPU shortcomings

, Jan 25th 2010 Discuss [0]

UMID's mbook BZ (aka the mbook M2) promised to address the complaints MID-lovers had about the first-gen mbook M1, and that's exactly the challenge Jenn over at Pocketables has set it in her hands-on review.  The touchscreen clamshell now gets an optical mouse, standardized ports and a hinge that opens wider than before; problem is, the specifications haven't been boosted as well. Onkyo BX 407A4 is rebadged, expensive UMID mbook M2

, Dec 11th 2009 Discuss [1]

Alongside Onkyo's rebadge of the Kohjinsha dual-display netbook yesterday, the company also announced a smaller system that should be familiar to MID-trackers.  The Onkyo BX 407A4 is more recognizable as the UMID mbook M2, launched back in September, but while UMID couldn't quite tell us when the M2 would be on sale, Onkyo are already taking orders for the BX-Series. Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 multitouch MID coming January [Updated]

, Dec 3rd 2009 Discuss [4]

Fujitsu have always been partial to tiny computers - the LifeBook U8x0 series still rank as some of the most appealing UMPCs around - and their latest model certainly looks endearing at first glance.  The Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 has a more traditional clamshell form-factor than the mini-convertibles in the company's back-catalog, but more than makes up with it with a 5.6-inch sunlight-readable WXGA multitouch display, 62GB SSD and optional integrated 3.5G WWAN. Update: Pricing and more photos added after the cut Read The Full Story

Sagemcom Spiga MID: yet another rebadged, expensive UMID

, Nov 27th 2009 Discuss [0]

It went unnoticed by most, but back in October Sagemcom announced it would be selling its first MID, the Sagemcom Spiga.  A rebadge of the UMID mbook M1, the Spiga will be reaching European shelves this month complete with its Intel Atom CPU, 8GB of flash storage, 4.8-inch touchscreen and integrated 3G HSPA.  Unfortunately they've also given it a stonking price tag: €500 ($748). Kohjinsha PA MID priced out of the market?

, Oct 26th 2009 Discuss [0]

Kohjinsha's PA-series MID may have satisfied us that the company is at least listening to critique about form-factor and usability - unlike other mini-notebooks, such as the UMID mbook m1 and Sharp’s NetWalker, it has a rotating touchscreen for use as a slate - but they still seem to have their fingers in their ears when it comes to pricing.  According to WOW-POW, the PA MID will come in at 69,800 yen, which works out to a whopping $760. One Device to Rule Them All – I Think Not

There’s a lot of discussion about the role of convergence of devices. Everywhere you go, it seems that someone’s pushing the notion that every function needs to be converged into one device. Now convergence is a great idea: the idea of carrying one device instead of multiple devices is compelling, but is it really realistic? Sure, I’d rather carry one device than two, but our research shows consumers will carry two or, in some age demographics, they’ll even carry as many as three.

Kohjinsha PA-series MID adds swivel-screen to mini-notebook

, Oct 6th 2009 Discuss [0]

Kohjinsha may have filled their MID niche with a rebadged UMID mbook m1, but that hasn't stopped their own engineers from coming up with a homegrown alternative.  The Kohjinsha PA-series takes the same mini-clamshell form-factor of the m1 and Sharp's NetWalker, but throws in a convertible display for using the MID as a slate. Sharp NetWalker PC-Z1 lands for unboxing, MID comparison

, Sep 29th 2009 Discuss [0]

Sharp's NetWalker PC-Z1 may not be the device for everyone - after all, a 5-inch touchscreen clamshell MID with a tiny QWERTY keyboard and 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor makes it a pretty niche handheld - but most people can appreciate a mini-laptop so we're pleased to see the first unboxing over at Pocketables.  Jenn of course is no stranger to MIDs, in fact she has a UMID mbook M1 on hand to compare the PC-Z1 with. UMID mbook M2 debuts: faster CPU, $499 in Q4 [Video]

, Sep 22nd 2009 Discuss [1]

UMID promised a new MID for IDF 2009, and they've delivered on that promise.  The UMID mbook M2 - seen here in pre-finalised prototype stage - gets a choice of faster 1.2GHz or 1.6GHz Intel Atom processors, together with 1GB of RAM (the M1 had just 512MB) and standardized ports.
