Real-life “Death Stars” deadlier than Darth Vader astronomers find

Alderaan isn't the only planet to fall victim to the "Death Star", astronomers claim, though the vast O-type stars actually across the galaxy destroying young planets before they've had time to form don't have convenient exhaust ports to stop them. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), a team of US and Canadian researchers discovered that huge quantities of ultraviolet radiation from stars at least 16-times the mass of our own sun can blast away the raw materials for new planetary systems.

China’s Chang’e-3 lander and Jade Rabbit rover land on moon

China's "Long March to the Moon" has placed a lander and a rover on the moon. The Chang'e-3 lander and her accompanying Yutu or "Jade Rabbit" rover arrived inside the right eye of the "Man in the Moon" this evening at 9:00PM Beijing time. This marks the first time in more than 40 years anyone has performed a soft lunar landing. All sources point to a successful deployment for the robot visitors.

NASA’s “MAVEN” Mars orbiter launched without a hitch

NASA's Mars orbiter MAVEN launched successfully today from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 1:28PM EST. Once it arrives in orbit around the Red Planet, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN orbiter will gather data about Mars' upper atmosphere to try and discover how exactly the planet got to be so dry and atmosphere-poor. Earlier probes suggest the planet used to be much more like Earth in terms of moisture and atmosphere thickness.

Vudu and Sony Pictures team up for Vudu Extras+ on select movies

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and the Walmart video streaming service Vudu have announced a tie up that will bring an enhanced viewing experience to movie watching fans. The new service is Vudu Extras+ and it allows streaming viewers to enjoy the same sort of extras typically available on DVD and Blu-ray titles. The Extras+ service will put those extra features from physical disks online and add in additional interactive features.
